964 3.6 Deck height question

I'm in the process of assembling my 964 engine, and am at the point where I'm checking deck height between the piston and cylinder. I've spent considerable time searching/reading threads related to this and am still a bit confused.
I've checked piston to cylinder height on #1 using a vernier caliper as well as the solder method. When checking with a vernier caliper I found the deck height to be too shallow (.65-.75mm), but when checking with the solder it is over 1mm. I believe this is because of the sealing ring between the head and cylinder. When using the caliper method, should I have measured across the sealing ring down to the edge of the piston? That measurement gets me over 1mm.
The threads I have seen all showed the caliper measurement from the edge of the cylinder without the sealing ring.
This is on a 1990 engine that has had the heads and cylinders machined to accept a 993 sealing ring. I know that the ring will get crushed somewhat but should still add some height to this measurement? I'd like to get some clarification before I move on to the valve to piston clearance measurements.

A Vernier caliper will not give you an accurate reading. Solder in the correct spots on the piston is the method. The piston will slightly cock if the solder isn't at opposing positions and will give you a slightly incorrect reading. Bob
