Do ya run screen on rear deck?

...for dedicated race car, do ya need it? assuming blocks air a little at speed, but not sure how much knowing that ya want to keep engine compartment as cool as possible

only benefit i can think of is keeping stone or other debris from getting eaten by fan.

Well, protecting from leaves and stones and tire rubber bits and plastic bags and other debris is pretty useful.

I have never found anything on top of my engine that was not supposed to be there. I do not see any good reason to use a screen on a race car. I would not want to use anything that might keep even the smallest amount of fresh air from getting in the engine compartment.

Of course, I never store my race car outside under a tree.

If you have stuff on top of your engine you are driving to slow

How about engine tin (sheet metal that fills gap between motor and engine bay).

...I have mine installed as I have concern of eating rocks in fan if I happen to venture off track into a gravel trap. Other than that, don't really see a need.

Most aircooled racers don't use the sheet metal. I've been running a 914 and a 911 without for 30 years and haven't had a problem yet. Of course I haven't visited gravel trap … yet.

I left off the sheet metal. Then got tired of the dust, so fabricated some aluminum with Dzus fittings to speed up R&R, which dealt with one of the reasons to leave it off, and shucked at least a bit of weight.

And there is the theory that it keeps some of the exhaust heat away from the topside. How well it does that, and to what extent, not quantified, but stands to reason it will reduce convection.

Pretty clear no engine is going to blow up because you left the tin surround off.

...ok, so without a doubt the screen was blocking air flow. I have a formed alminum rear deck that I had a few holes cut in that I covered with aluminum tape. Been running like that all last year. After event last weekend (with no screens) I noticed the tape was "blown" inward. So no doubt air pressure higher now in engine compartment than cabin than it was before.
