Ship and rebuild

After driving it for 20 years, 87 Carrera Cab finally needs a new rebuild.

Living in the Bay Area, the quotes I'm getting make it financially not viable. It's a daily driver, and the prospect of spending 25k on the engine alone doesn't make sense.

When I last looked into this, many years ago, there were a number of shops that you could ship your engine to and they would either use it as a core and send you a new rebuilt motor, or rebuild for you.

Do any of those exist any more? Any recommendations?

I fear that the grim reaper may be coming for the old girl if I can't figure out how to do this cheaper.

You might try Flat 6 Innovations.

Or

EBS Racing

25k seems very expensive. Going through it now and have some expensive discretionary upgrades (new fuel pump etc) and still a good 7/8k shy of your quote. Mine isn’t a bargain basement place either.

Henry at Supertec? Was incredibly knowledgeable and generous with his time when I called him. Knew I wasn’t a prospective customer and shot the breeze with me for 1hr I’d say.

Talk to Bruce (Flat6pac) and take a look at his contributions here.

If you moved from the Bay Area you could probably afford 3 new gt3’s.

You would most likely only need top end rebuilt. Valves and guides are main wear I had on my 1986 engine.

There is also the Stable in SF and Hi-Tech in Marin, which I used for a tranny rebuild.

Flat6Pak, Bruce, rebuilt my 3.2. It has about 3.5 hours on it now and according to the guy who is putting the car together it runs great. I thought Bruce was very communicative, sent me pictures of the entire disassembly and then the build process. I think it was around $10K all in. Machine work, parts and assembly. Now my car is not home yet, maybe in 2 weeks, but the guy driving it as it is being finished is very familiar with these cars and 911 motors. So save some money and give Bruce a shout. I think it has been 3.5 years since the engine build.

I’ve known Bruce for years. Great guy and solid engine builder. He has much lower overhead than a big shop so he might be a good alternative for you.
