The simplicity of the air engines

I come to love these early engines as they are so much simpler to the later water engines. They are engineered to a higher standard, even though they are many years old. The new engines are a lot more complicated and when something goes wrong, it hurts your brain trying to figure out what!!!

We are going back into the older engines and have many new parts under development. Our core business is designing and manufacturing our own parts for any engine we build, "hot rod" or just plain mess with. This is not limited to Porsche and not just about "hot rodding".

The most recent development was with the 991.1 GT3 engine that has a major fault with the valve train. We designed and developed our own "solid" version of the valve train, eliminating the hydraulic system that proved so troublesome. This is our wheel house of work we do each day. Now we are focusing on the earlier air cooled engines so that this technology can be offered to these early amazing engines.

I will post more updates on what is coming as we get further into the projects. I can say that there is a 4 cam air cooled center plug, small chamber 2V cylinder head, cam housing with finger follower valve actuation coming. 1st article prototype parts are in the first stages of machining now.

Here is the final assembled GT3 cylinder head with the PD solid fingers fitted the 991.1 cylinder head. This shows the level of work we do and what the quality of the 911 air parts coming will be.

Thank you for posting Neil, genuinely enjoying reading your posts...question, what keeps you from doing a 4-valve air cooled head leveraging your water cooled head work?

We tried years ago and failed miserably. Just not enough real estate to have 4 valves, a center plug and enough cooling.

I believe this has been achieved recently but required additional "oil cooling". Don't understand the reasoning of this when there is proven 4V heads cooled by water.

Certainly not for the faint of heart.

I am liking the idea. Hopeful it comes to fruition.

Very nice Neil but then again, that is the norm for goodies from your shop. I take it lash adjustments by stem caps?

OK, I guess I made an assumption that the newer water cooled engines length and proportions were very close the air cooled, thanx...

I'd be interested in knowing more about this oil cooled 4V, I know I don't want water cooling for an air cooled build, although I've seen pics of someone putting a water head on an air cooled lower...

Thanx for the follow-up...

No one has been successful building 4 valve heads for an air-cooled 911 engine without water cooling them. I define successful as being as durable and reliable as 2 valve heads.

Well, I doubt anyone that owns one of the 4 valve Singer/Williams engines will be interested in letting us find out if that's the case.

I don't think anyone is close to saying that the Singer/Williams 4V heads heads experiment has been a success...especially when using the definition of success I gave previously.
