Stripped case threads
Hoping someone could point me in the right direction. The threads are stripped out most of them came out with the bolt not sure e of the thread size its the big bolt with the 17mm head.. So what the normal fix for this? I'm not a fan of helicoils. Can I put in a time sert? If so what size? Or tap out to the next size up possibly a sae size.?...
Thanks in advance Regards Nedhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1642595500.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1642595543.jpg |
M10 x 1.5 timesert
|
same as the cylinder studs .. i just happen to have that kit
thanks |
I had a rear one strip out, I didn't want to buy a 10mm timesert kit for one hole so I used a VW case saver.
EDIT: BTW I know it looks too big, I just remembered this hole had a striped out previous bad helicoil repair and I had to dig out what was left of the original stud. Timesert wouldn't have worked, maybe a big-sert would, but this solution solved the problem. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads...1394543952.jpg |
I've got a couple of cases where the upper driver's side transmission mount stud had been repaired with a Helicoil. Works just fine in the application. I had a transmission mount to body bolt hole with stripped threads and had it Helicoiled. Worked fine for 25 years or more, though I had to replace it recently. I can buy the Helicoil stuff at my local hardware store.

Is the vw case saver the same as used for repairing head stud threads in the magnesium cases?
|
Yes
|
Yes but there's a couple of different flavors. Most VW guys use the 8mm 1.25 head stud case saver with a 10mm OD, then there's a 10mm ID x 12mm OD metric case saver and the OS oddball CS in my pic which has a 10mm ID with a 1/2"-13 thread on the OD.
You use the 10mm x 12mm metric CS in the 911 mag case. |
Mark,
Thanks for that case saver info, it isn't as easy to find as it seems like it should be. |
For inserts in this application, we use custom sized CaseSavers as opposed to TimeSerts.
The material used for standard TimeSerts seems soft and the thread pitch is too fine. |
