timing chains replacement?
 

Hi, rebuilding a 930. Do you guys replace the timing chains as part of a rebuild even though they don't appear bad? Do they ever go bad?

They are cheap enough to replace, but just concerned about the new chain meshing with the old crank/cam gears ? Also, I just hate replacing something that i know has been working, and then end up with trouble with the new one.

If you guys recommend to replace them, I noticed there is a standard iwis one and a racing version and then Porsche brand.. Any detriment to the racing version? I know some "racing parts" might be better considered better, but often at the expense of reliability or comfort.

They are a wear item so yes, replacement is recommended. What I strongly do not recommend is a master link that uses C clips rather than the old style. I see the chain listed comes with C style clips but the regular style master link is available separately (see link below). I have personally seen two instances where the C clips came off, and miracle of miracles, the side plate stayed on despite nothing holding it in place.

New chain and all new sprockets if you're splitting the case.

The 125 04 chain sprockets they sell today are crap and the metal is soft.I will take some pics tomorrow of what I use.The 055 00 chain idler sprockets are just as bad along with the cam sprockets.I am glad not to have a shop anymore and have to deal with this.Ciao Fred

If the chains have worn - as per what adjustment is left on the tensioners, then the sprockets are worn same. So putting new chains on worn sprockets gets a result for a very short time. The chains will quickly wear to fit the out of synch sprockets.
You can fit new chains without splitting the case, but you only get one chance to fit new drive sprockets.

Totally agree with Fred and it is not just the sprockets Fred is referring to but many replacement items in this day and age are not even close to the quality of the originals. I too am glad I am not having to deal with these issues for customers cars and very disappointed with some of the crap parts I buy for my own cars. Glad I have a good stash of old original parts.

I made the mistake and replaced my perfectly fine sprockets. New ones appears to be not the same high quality but softer and last time I looked at them they seem to be wearing, after less than 20k miles I regret replacing them. Be cautious
