How do these Cam gears look
 

Hello all,
This place truly is a treasure trove of air cooled information. We are so lucky to have the people we have on here. I finally pulled the trigger and dropped my engine to do a top end rebuild. Still contemplating breaking the case but that is for another post. Till now I’ve been able to find all the info I’ve needed to get this far. Heads and stuff are currently at Cgarr’s place to be rebuilt. My question is about the cam gears. I think they are fine but would like some opinions:

They start to look like that when the sprocket alignment is off or high miles. Very easy to see the wear if you compare them to new ones. Your assessment of “fine” is probably ok. They’ll work. I would however recommend replacement of all 4 sprockets just based on the wear I see. I have a wholesale account and they are not too expensive. Retail might hurt a little more though
If you get some new ones you’ll see what I mean

New sprockets have not always been good , last year there were some intermediate shaft sprockets
that wore quickly clogging the oil pump with metal particles . The wear on the side is not a reason
for new ones . I would go with original tested instead of unknown new , my 2 cents .

Thanks for the info guys. Think I will go with the original. They only have 80 k miles on them

Putting it back together make sure chain alignment is on the spec as it looks like it was out previously.

Thanks, I will. I purchased the Stomski racing tools to help with timing and alignment. What do you guys see that makes you think they were not aligned? I don’t think the engine has ever been apart. I’ve owned the car since 2004 and it only has 82k miles on it.

The gears are multi faceted on the sides. If you compare to new it is very obvious

With regard to sprocket alignment, I know the shims available are 0.5mm... but does anyone know if a 0.25mm shim is also available? Sometimes I get to within 0.25mm of spec, and it would be nice to have a 0.25mm shim to get me to spot on!

I haven’t been able to find them. I do have a stash of some that I got from my dad but no idea where they came from. He started his career in the 70s so they could be pretty old.

I know '65 and '66 911's sometimes had .25mm shims .I guess Porsche realized this was not really necessary .

Wow, i hope not, i just replaced every sproket...

I am getting ready to do my final engine assembly and this series of posts about cam shims motivated me to go looking for shims. I just purchased a few .2mm and .3mm thick shims to try out when I set up my sprockets. Should be able to get much closer to perfection. They are not plated like the factory shims, but once installed this does not have a negitive.

David the lack of plating is no problem. They are sealed in the engine so corrosion is not a worry. Where did you purchase them?
