Will a 993 crank fit into a 1978 930 crankcase?
I need some technical help here. I am very new to the PORSCHE world and I am piecing together a 3 L for a 72 targa. Someone on here posted a 993 crankshaft very reasonable price and I was curious if that would fit in an older Style 930 block. Also, if it does what size rods would I have to use.

I can tell you that a 964 crank will. Question is, how different is a 993 crank from a 964 crank? I think not much. They both go in to the same case from the factory.

The main bearing size for all crankshafts from 3.0L SC on are the same. They stayed the same thru the 997 turbos (they use the same crankshaft as 99)3. You can put any of these crankshafts in any of these cases. You will need to get the appropriate rods and P&C to have everything work. In the case of a 3.0L you would need custom pistons if you wanted to use a 993 crankshaft. You might want to talk to William Knight, (Knightrace on this list) as I believe he does a lot of these long stroke motors.

993 has narrower rod journals than the 964.

The main journal sizes are the same, but since the crank was beefed up in the material between the journals, the 993 rods had to be narrowed. So you need to use the 993 rods also.
These are fairly dainty especially if you find a set of the lighter weight groups, which I would not advise using. Use ARP bolts and find the more heavy rod groups. These will work w your SC pistons if you rebush the pin ends for 22 MM pins, though if not forged(your pistons) and you want to start with better fresh parts, it is well worth it to get a new set of pistons w more modern features, heck go 98 MM and make a 3.45 L, one of our favorite combos. We may have an extra set of stock 993 rods w Raceware bolts. PM if interested . Kevin GAS Motorsport

hello to you,
we are refitting a 930 turbo engine, and we purchased connecting rods from Maxspeedingrods. The problem, the original bearings, just like the king tri metal do not fit in the axis of the connecting rod. and the white assembly on the crankshaft is a little too "tight". We bought a second set of Maxspeedigrods connecting rods, it is exactly the same. Does anyone have a solution or an opinion? thank you ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re-machine the tang groove on the opposite side of the rod.

Hello, thank you for your answer.
this is the solution we were thinking of. but perhaps the 996 turbo or 997 turbo bearings would make it possible to avoid machining. The rods are made in China and the tang is in the wrong location.
Try the 993 bearings or narrow the bearings you have if that kind of compromise works for you Cheers

Thank you for your input. I went ahead and bought that 993 crankshaft. The seller was kind enough to include a set of rods. My question is how do I know if I have the more desirable 993 rods that you recommend using?
