1st one

I have built several US iron engines, many VW air cooled and a few Alfa 2. liter engines in my past but never a Porsche 6. I have access to a 1971 2.2 liter. It is stuck and hopefully salvageable. Is it worth $2.k? If so can I add larger pistons/cylinders or ie it necessary to open up the cylinder bores in the case?
Thanks in advance

I would make a deal with the seller that if it's mostly junk when you open it up, then you renegotiate. Pig-in-a poke really. Could have run out of oil and seized the crank, ruined the case, stuff like that.

If it's a '71T, then it has a non-counterweight crank.

I am just finishing up a re-build of a '74 good running motor. We had to have the cases re-machined and line honed, plus most of the studs had to be certed as they were pulling out of the 50 year old magnesium case.

I can almost assure you that the pistons and cylinders are toast. The heads will need to be completely rebuilt.

I agree with John. If the crank and rods are bad, the motor is junk, basically.

As long as you can get at least your investment out of it, yer good. But if they're zeniths, not so good if the rest is trash. Do you feel lucky?

Thanks all for replies, but I have decided to pass. It looks like I will be building a stroker/big bore for this 914 project.

Sometimes deals like this even if it's free still is too expensive

Ask me how I know...

Exactly, a couple years ago I was given a complete 914. Many $$ away from being roadable. Instead, I found a running car and enjoying it
