Header Tubing…

Besides Burns… What are the other good places to get SS header tubing?

Best place I know:

Exhaust Components - SPD Home Page B

They have the best collectors too....

This is where Mark Robles at S•CAR•GO Racing gets his parts to make his well regarded custom headers. One of the advantages that SDP has is that they offer collectors with 4 different converging angles and transitions with 3 different diverging angles.

You'll need to determine your needed material first, then go shopping.

If you want durable, lightweight headers, you'll likely want to stick with 321 stainless. It's not that much more than 304 or 316 in the big scheme of things. 16 gauge is doable (and my go-to on turbo applications), but relatively heavy for a normally aspirated race engine. 0.035" (~20 gauge) is about half the weight. You'll need a selection of "U" bends and 90 degree bends, along with your straight pipes. If you're building "step" headers, plan accordingly.

As Scott mentioned, SPD makes some nice stuff; I like their flanges and merge collectors, although I have also made my own collectors at times. Buying a ready made collector sure does simplify things.

For welding stainless, you'll need to either autogenous weld (no filler rod) or use a filler rod with a higher number than your parent metal. For 321, that's 347 rod. Back purging with argon is needed to keep the backside from "sugaring." On high end headers, the flanges are often welded to the pipe, then brazed at the flange with silicon bronze rod to reduce the tendency to crack.

I use these guys for 16 gauge 321.

Another source for great exhaust and exhaust components is Reid Washbon Racing Exhaust.
I've used a few of his components and complete systems on personal projects over the years. Track jewelry is an understatement. His combination of Stainless and Inconel components have been the heart of many championship efforts. The NPTI GT and GTP Nissans just to mention one. I think I still have most of a Washbon 962 exhaust on the wall.

Thinking about making your own headers?
We have our new headers ready to ship. 1 1/2" ans 15/8"
The compact size makes them appropriate for 911 and 914/6.
Work on megaphones as we speak.

Thanks Guys...

Yes, Henry, actually looking to modify mine. Flipped you a note yesterday.

Got your email. Great looking system. What changes are planned and why?

These are beautiful.

Those primaries are short and the collector has a steep angle to it. Are these for a high RPM engine with all the power up top?

Here are photos of the prototype 1 3/4" headers William Knight had made for me:

These are for a 3.6L race engine that revs to 8000 RPM. Note the longer primaries and the less severe angle of the collectors.

Thank you.
They seem to work for a multitude of engine size, and cam configurations. These little gems are delivering great drivabilty on street oriented MFI and carburetor engines. This configuration is even a great starting point for custom turbo applications.
Perfect for every engine? of course not. But a great compromise for those seeking improved scavenging, compact size and incredible quality at a price point that makes sense.

How about places that build complete custom headers? I know S-CAR-GO, Reid, Gamroth, Knight.

Debating, do I try and modify mine or have set built.

Henry -- In short I'm building a big motor to put down power similar to my friends driving 997/991Cups with 3.8's. Lots of headers out there to work with 964 and earlier cars, however, mine being 993, headers can not go forward of motor due to suspension cross member.

If you want big power, you need to talk to William Knight. You will want his headers and his version of Xtreme heads. The head are critical to making power and the Xtreme not only make more power than anyone else’s, they also will last a long time.

HyTech in Irvine, California also makes a nice product.

Always made more power than anything else we tested on everything from 3.2L to 4.0L 997 Cups.

Irvine is my old stumping grounds and I've never heard of them. Nice looking product. Excellent new source....options are good.

Definitely worth a chat with John at HyTech for any customer looking for big power with deep pockets. He is mainly known for his Formula Atlantic exhausts from the 4AGE Toyota days and Honda stuff but he knows how to make nice stuff that works. Investment cast flanges for the 996/997 stuff, stepped headers with anti reversion chambers.

POC “stock” class 3.2L picked up 10whp over everything else and the set he made for a 4.0L GrandAm spec motor made 15 more on PMNA’s engine dyno than the M&M RSR headers.

I bought a nice set of RSR headers for my 2.8 from Brian(RarlyL8) at M&K Headers. He custom make these to match your motor Specs. Might be a option for you.
