Removal of Valve Spring Shims

I am having difficulty removing the shims under the valve spring seat for intake #6. The engine is in the car which is a 914/6. I have tried a magnet and brake cleaner.
I can see the shim turning. It appears that valve seal might be preventing the shim from being removed. Any ideas on removing the shims would be appreciated.

Remove the valve stem seal, then use the magnet and brake cleaner.

Depending on who made the seals, the OD is usually bigger than the ID of the shim.

What would be the process for removing the valve stem seal?

No doubt you’re having difficulty, this is normally a bench job. Later engines had shims with a larger inside diameter that fit over the stem seals.

The inside diameter of the shims that were removed from exhaust #6 is 0.548 inches.
Pelican offers several brands of valve stem seals. Which brand should I order?

Would one of the 11 piece valve stem remover and installer tool kits sold on Amazon work for the installations of the valve stem seal?

I have ordered the valve stem seals from Porsche. The engine is a 1976 911S.

My preference are the Viton not the Teflon types. Just my choice.

If you have a valve spring shim that doesn't want to come out with a magnet, use compressed air and nozzle. Simply point the air nozzle near the OD of the shim, and ... poof, ezy-pezy.

BTW, the shims get stuck with hydraulic lock due to oil underneath them.

I am having problems removing the valve stem seals from intake #6.
The springs and seat haye been removed.
Any tips would be appreciated.

The brown ones can virtually bond themselves to the guide. The pictured tool doesn't stand a chance. They're hard to install also. White teflon is easy.

RSOHC 09-16-2023 01:08 PM

The existing seals are white. The tip of the pictured tool is not shaped properly. The serrations of the tool do not have contact with the seal.

The seal was removed with a modified seal puller tool.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1694995636.jpg

The valve spring keepers are not releasing from the valve spring retainer with the spring compressed. How can I get the keepers to release from the valve spring retainer?

RSOHC 09-21-2023 03:26 PM

I am using a P7E valve spring compressor tool and 50 psi of compressed air to try to hold the valve in place. When I tighten the valve spring compressor tool I can hear air escaping in the valve area. The piston for the cylinder is at TDC.

dannobee 09-21-2023 04:37 PM

Tap the edge of the retainer with a brass drift and a hammer before you install the P7E, they'll free up.

RSOHC 09-21-2023 04:59 PM

I have tried the brass drift and it did not work.

RSOHC 09-22-2023 04:44 PM

The problem was solved by turning the retainer with a pair needle nose vise grips.
