Piston pin bushing dimension
I bought a set of 2.2 rods for an engine I am building that have already been sent to a machine shop. When checking the dimensions for myself, all measurements look perfect except the piston pin bushing width measurement is approx 24.70 mm instead of 25.80 -26.00 listed in Wayne’s book. All 6 measure the same and the 24.70is pretty close to the 24.80 range for the 3.0 and 3.2 engines. ( I don’t have access to a factory manual to confirm these specs)
Could these be the wrong bushings installed or maybe just wrong for my engine specs? I plan on running JE forged pistons (86mm) but haven’t bought them yet. I assume I would need to have different bushings pressed in due to the size difference?Just thought I would ask the experts, I am inexperienced with these engines and trying to learn. It’s a 914/6 case with 66mm non counterweight crank and planning on the JE pistons Thanks Nate |
I always use the pin and hone the rod to fit..

What tool did you use to measure?? You should buy your pistons, measure all the pins to make sure they’re the same and send one to the machine shop with your rods.

If I'm reading this correctly, are you asking about the pin bushing length verses the pin end of the rod width?
Typically the pin bushing is longer than the pin end with and some of the bushing will protrude from each side of the rod. Maybe they trimmed the bushing to the pin end width. If this is the case, no problem as the rod is bottom guided. |
Thanks for the replies, sorry for the confusing wording. I measured with a digital vernier caliper. The length of the pin bushing (how much it’s sticking out of the sides of the rod) is 1mm shorter over all than the spec I have for this year of rod (so .5mm per side) ,so wondering if this clearance side to side is a big deal or not. Sounds like from what Neil is saying maybe not that big of a deal?
