Resealing “dads” car after sitting for nearly 30 years
This post is for help from the community and to document my progress over time.
The car is a 1977 911 (ROW) that my dad purchased in Germany in the early 80’s. I have had the car for about 4 years, it does run and this summer I flushed the old gas out of it and got it running for the first time in years. I’ve only heat cycled it a handful of times and only driven it (around the block) 2-3 times. The engine doesn’t seem to leak while it sits (maybe a it has a very slow drip while sitting). But while running it definitely drips, and upon “**** down” it seems to piss (excuse my language lol) from the rear main seal (at least I’m pretty sure it’s the rear main seal). If I can do enough research (I’m not a mechanic and fairly new to this stuff) I will be doing my first engine drop to simply re seal the engine so I dont start an exhaust fire lol. |

First things first. Put some oil dye in the tank, then drive it around. Look around with the black light and the goggles and pinpoint the leak before dropping the engine. More common than the rear main seal is something leaking in what we call the "triangle of death," close to the flywheel, but up on top of the rear (front) of the engine. Many leaks are in that area and make a huge mess everywhere. But pinpoint the leak before you do anything else.

My dad thought a little differently. "How much does a rebuild cost? OK, how much does a quart of oil cost?"
Drive it a lot and see what the condition of everything is before you start a project. Your scope may narrow (or widen) considerably based on what you find.
