Engine run stand

Kind of off topic of this forum…..but having engine built for restoration project.
We would like to run engine in …….as body won’t be ready well beyond completion of engine.
Any information on building or buying ( reasonably) an engine run stand would be appreciated.
TIA

There’s some being sold on Amazon that seem to be good. I remember it being about $500.

I happened to be about an hour away from JB Racing in Eustis, FL. JB Racing did the machine work for my rebuild, so, after I put it together, (10 years later!), I scheduled a day on their engine dyno. Excellent facility and very knowledgeable folks-well worth the time and expense. I toyed with the idea of building an engine stand, but I’m glad I didn’t.

Years and years ago, I used a borrowed Stuska dyno on my 911 engines. Fast forward a few decades and I opened an engine restoration shop for 356, 912 and pre-'73 911s. I built three running stands for those types of engines. I hate to be leaning into an engine compartment while tweaking and tuning the fresh engines. The running stands weren't too difficult to engineer and build but I don't think I would have done then if it was only for one or two engines. Three years ago I bought a used Stuska dyno and still haven't had the time to hook it up.

I built mine out of wood and used a old 901 transmission case. Not pretty but gets the job done. I currently have my 5th engine on it. Added wheels so it was easy to move around. Its screwed together with deck screws and can be disassembled so not a big item to store.

engine stand

I rented this stand from a local shop. It uses a fabricated adapter instead of a 915 bellhousing for front support and starter mount. There was a similar adapter in the classifieds recently.

Hi John,
Love that non-traditional ingenuity that gets the job done. Can you post a picture from the other side as well and include the mounting points?

Thanks for pics

You can contact me directly for engine test stand parts from Zalex Industries.
We make the starter adapter bellhousing pictured above as well as an entire support frame with oil tank support.
The 911 stuff isn't on our website, but it can be made to order.
Here's a video of my engine on it.

Sadly, being able to cut and weld metal cleanly is something I will never master in this lifetime!

I can’t take credit for it. This is a test stand that Zalex used to sell many years ago. The same person that still sells the adapter ring still currently available.

Engine Stand comment

My buddy built one for our purpose …….one lesson learned was design should consider factory oil lines to tank otherwise you will get stung having those made. The design is fine functionally but one posters photo showed angled sections that allowed oil tank to be positioned for use of factory lines…

If you care about your engine , it should be run on a dynamometer not an engine stand .

Run stand

Would you mind explaining….
Seems like a blanket statement without any rationale. …..

85RedCarrera 12-10-2025 04:19 AM

If you are talking about a danger involved with running these engines without a load on them...that would also be the case if you started and ran the engine in the car while parked.

I don't think anyone is attempting to perform the entire engine break-in procedure on an engine stand- just the initial start and cam break-in (which should not harm anything).
