Old Porsche New owner

My girlfriend and I just picked up a 1975 911 that needs a bit of engine work. So it looks like we will be pulling the engine eventually. It's currently leaking oil from the crank case bolts and gaskets (minor at the moment). The question is. We specifically looked for a pre smog car so we were no longer subject to the power saping emmisions controls. I want to know what all is involved in removing the emmissions from a california car that will never be smoged again. I think this should help with the engine problems along with replacing the case bolts and heilicoiling the threads the enigine heat should decrease without the smog equipment installed ( I think...) We are planning on replacing the exhaust system as well. We don't need a race car just a fun car that can get us around town and down a few windy roads somewhat reliably. other than the oil leak the rest of the car in in great condition. For 4500.00 in tradible goods we got the porsche with no cash involved. I think it was a good deal despite the needed engine work. Who knows if we get this thing suitible for longer trips you may see us at a future rallie or fun runs in So. Cal.

Thumbs up Welcome!

Wow, Sounds like you got a Really Good Deal! I think you'll enjoy your P car! Although keep in mind the car Is 33 years old and will be an ongoing project. Just have fun with it! You may consider backdating to the 73 and prior exhaust manifold/ headers (if my memory serves me right). These will allow for more power!

Are those 16's ? I have a set of staggered fully polished fuchs on my 71.. They look Great on and early car!

Submit more PICs..

The emission stuff you should remove is the air pump and thermal reactors. You will need the exhuast system from an earlier car (74 or earlier). You will need to plug the air injector holes eventually but some people leave the air injection pipes inplace until they overhaul the engine. You need to get Waynes book on how to rebuild engines and/or Bruce Anderson's 911 performance handbook. Read the chapters on rebuilding these engines several times and you'll figure out what to do.

Thanks guys!!! So it doesn't look like the emmissions will be too difficult. As for exhaust I was looking at FabSpeed With the Cat bypass for a system. Any thoughts on their product?? The book is the first thing on the list. I'm familiar with VW Pancake engines but it's easy to see this is an entirely different beast in similar clothing. Keep in mind this may be Blasphemy but we aren't looking to make it all stock or original. Engine tweeks and modification suggestions are welcome. But remember it is my girlfriends driver so we need it streetable. Thanks

I would suggest getting an exterior front mount oil cooler. The 2.7 overheats very badly because of the thermal reactors place on the car for smog reasons. If you don't know what these are crank up the back of the car and look directly below the valve covers and you will see a foot long 3" diameter pipe about the size of a loaf of english muffins. These are poison to you cars life. 2.7s don't last more than 70k most of the time unless the engine has been rebuilt and done correctly. If the engine is original and has the smog junk on it and close to that mileage, I would save yourself alot of money and heart ache down the road and rebuild it while everything is in fair shape. It's a balance of drive now and pay lots for rebuild later, or rebuild now and feel secure driving on a road trip with no hesitancy in your mind. Don't use heli-coils .... have a porsche machine shop like Ollies in Santa Ana, Ca put coarse thread steel inserts into your case instead. As to modifications on your car. It's wise in my opinion to stay with original set ups for the car. German engineering is famous for a reason, so bare in mind the farther you get from the original intention for the car the worse it is for your vehicle. I know that's general sounding but you'll understand as time goes by. Also, your car has SC back wheel flares not original to the car, but great for running 16" tires on the back. The original weld would not allow you to only run 15"s in the back. A good tire set up is backs: 225/50 16 fronts: 205/55. Another suggestion is get the correct year whale tale. What you have now is too new to the car and most porsche people notice things like that, but if you don't care that's okay too. The car is very nice looking as is.... any interior photos we can see? I hope I didn't sound critical, I"m just trying to give you the honest skinny. Glad to answer anything you need to know. Relayswitcher

Flares on a '75? Any idea when they were added? I don't think they made and Targa Carreras. Could be wrong.
