regular gas for 3.0L rebuild
 

Ok the gas prices are getting crazy. I'm building a 230+ hp 3.0L for my 72T and it's going to require premium fuel! This is like my taking the the exhaust off and replacing it with headers and then moving to Oregon. Can't drive in the winter, brrr!

So I'm saying to my self, why don't I put low compression pistons, not high compression, and add a turbo or supercharger, hmmm! Can you do that, make 230 hp and use regular gas????

Forced induction on aircooled engines need the good stuff otherwise you buy a LOT of parts.

Yeah I guess your right. Even the R1340 up to the R 3350 needed 130 octane! There's no other way to go but cubic inches if you really want to go fast.

The old Corsair with the R2800 had a 6:1 power to weight and it would do 400mph in leve flight. Ahhhh memories.

Yup,..the only one that was happy on 80 or 100 was the R985,...:)

Those others are boosted too much for the red stuff and even the blue (or green) is marginal if you run at higher manifold pressures. Wish they would bring back the purple gas (aside from the Reno event),....LOL.

For your car, make it a 3.2 or 3.4 w/twin ignition and with reasonable compression (under 9.1), it will run on anything.

We used to gas up an old Connie they had at the local airport years ago and mentioning the purple av gas brought back some memories. Seems like we pumped as much oil into the thing as we did gas.

That big Pratt, R3350, had a 50 gallon oil reservoir as I remember. Of course my little 2.7L has almost 3 gallons so I guess it's all relative.
