Broken intake stud.
Greetings
I purchased a pre 1980 3.0 with one broken intake stud with a bad repair job and the rest of the intake studs refuse to come out. I have a few questions. 1) can a machine shop repair the poor repair job by installing an insert or welding the head? 2) the rest of the studs will not come out. Does anyone have any suggestions for this problem? Thanks! |
Anything can be fixed, I have made my own inserts for the exhaust to fix some butchered jobs before so a good shop should be able to fix it if they really want to.. Heat has always worked for me on stubborn studs.

do you heat the stud or heat the head? Cheers |
When I did my PMO conversion, I broke one stud due to not using the torch. Luckily, there was still enough thread left to whack on a stud puller. I soaked each stud with a good penetrant for a couple of days. Then I used mapp gas on the surface around the stud, not on the stud, for approximatley a minute and half. Then turn the double nut and all studs came out without any issues.

I heated the studs with propane and got all but one. The last one I welded a nut onto and the heat from the welding helped to break it loose.
