Well folks... I might have bit off more than I can chew, but here goes...

First thing I have done is acquire two vehicles from an area in Marysville, CA.

It was an ugly pair of cars...see gallery.

First thing I'd like to do is see if anyone can help me decode this VIN on the second (wreck)

it is: 91A 0 133847

Anyone have a clue about that number. Supposedly it is a 1983 911 SC.

Does that look right?

The original owner states: (and looked to be telling the truth)

1. The wrecked car comes from European delivery ... he picked it up himself from a dealership in 1985 in Germany... with 25K mi on it.

2. Picked it up at Port of Oakland, drove it for approximately 1 months, perhaps two and putting less than 1000 mi on the car... then subsequently wrapped it around a telephone pole (quite literally) and almost killed himself. He was 20 years old at the time. He is now 43.

He or his parents attempted to preserve what was left of the car, but eventually it ended up in an old barn (lightly preserved with a tarp) which took it toll on the engine and chassis. Amazingly the chassis is clean enough that the original gages, wiring and lots of parts are still good.

I tore the motor down yesterday and the results are in the gallery. 8 broken head studs, which may have occurred in the wreck, since it happened at 100 mph or more. The concern I still have is whether the motor is still balanced after taking a super hard hit like that. It must have halted the motor very quickly after striking the pole, and then tumbled into a field next to some frightened cows. From the clock (which seems to have been halted at the exact moment of the accident it was 8:40 or so. I think the owner (Roman) said it was a Saturday before Easter Sunday in 1985.

So it's been sitting around for a while. It's ugly now, but it'll be pretty sometime in the next year.

The 3.0 are breaking studs anyway but I don't think that the 23 years of mouse piss dripping down them helped at all. You can see the corrosion at the break on most of them.

Correct. The way this guy stored the engine was not good, but it's still questionable when they broke. The broken ones (8 of them) were all from the exhaust side of the 1,2, and 3 cylinders. I was prepared to rebuild the engine anyways, but I was holding out hope that the studs would be ok.

Apparently, I will have to just build a better motor than I was going to.

By the way... I just checked the numbers on the wreck... they tell the story a little different than Roman told me... it's definitely a 1980 SC. It might be that he hit that pole just a bit harder than he thought.

Regardless I already knew the engine was a 1980 3.0 liter motor that went in that car.

Anyone have some ideas of how far to take this 3.0 Liter motor? I want to go for the most power, bang for my buck. What is my best combination build? (i.e. 964 cams, special pistons, headers, exhaust)

Anyone have any opinions on PMO setup as compared to CIS for my 3.0 Liter? I mean I know there's the 3600 hit, but assuming money is not the deciding factor (within reason)

Does the PMO system work ALOT better than the CIS for the motor and does anyone have any experience with both?

Since I am able to go smog exempt with the 74 chassis, I want to take full advantage of the freedom to pump the motor out.


Any comments, advice or otherwise about that?

P.S. I have Tom Amon on tap for guidance during the rebuild. I am probably going to let him do some of the work for me.
