Camshaft Timing Help - Pictures Included
I need some help confirming that I am completing the left side camshaft timing correctly. I am following Wayne's directions to the T, but still feel like I have missed something...
Left side No.1 camshaft (have set the cylinder valve lash to .1mm, the dot on the camshafts are pointing up, I reset the dial indicator so that everything is set to zero and the crankshaft is sitting at Z1 TDC. ![]() ![]() Rotated the crankshaft 360* and went thru the timing process (turning camshaft, replacing retaining pin, tightening cam nut) and adjusted the camshaft to 4.3 (according to Dial Indicator). Rotated the crankshaft at least 8+ rotations and got similar results. Then reset #1 to Z1 TDC on the compression point (Dial Indicator showing zero). When I slowly start turning the crankshaft 360* clockwise around to Z1 TDC again the dial indicator arm turns around 6 times and ends up at the picture shown below...I am hoping this is saying my intake valve overlap is 4.2???? I am using Solex cams which have a recommended range of 4.2-4.6 with 4.3 recommended. ![]() The confusion is when the dial indicator has turned so many times and I am not sure if I truly ended up at 4.2. Any help with this would be appreciated!

You need to have a preload on the dial guage in excess of the 4.7, that becomes 0.
The first 360 degrees is the measurable spec. Continuing past the 360 degrees the cam is still opening the valve but thats of no interest in the setting of the of 4.2 to 4.6. I always set to the high side of the spec to allow wear and chain stretch. Bruce |
