Machine Shop Recommendation

Hello To My Fellow Pelicans,

I am in the process of rebuilding my 3.3 motor. The heads are in need of some work.

Does anyone have a machine shop that they recommend?

Regards,
Daniel

I used the guys at Xtreme Cylinder Heads in Florida. They did a very nice job refreshing my Carrera twin plug heads. I was expecting to only need a simple valve job, etc. but after disassembling the heads, they found that new guides were needed along with exhaust valves. Now, I have a set of heads that I feel are in really great shape and may be depended on to perform properly for a long time! The cost of their work was very reasonable. If needed, they can "CC" your cylinder heads so that you will have the chamber volume info. You will likely hear about other shops that are just as qualified, so choose the one that is closest to your location that has a good rep. Be absolutely certain to package the heads carefully and insure for LOTS of value! Good luck!

There are a number of very good shops in the country that specialize in the rebuilding of Porsche heads. I live in Chicago and was in your same position about a year ago. Not knowing who to go to locally, I ended up sending most of my parts to Steve Weiner who is a major contributor to this BBS. Steve is incredibly knowledgeable of all the tricks that can be used with our motors, and that, along with recommendations from others, made the choice fairly easy for me.

As I began to investigate more local shops, I did get pointed, by our local community to Wallley Werner who owns Werner Machine in Mokena. His specialty is head work and particularly on Porsches. Though I did not give any work to him ( not knowing of him when I was ready for the work ) I would certainly investigate using him the next time I need cylinder head work. Wally's phone number is 708-326-4700.

I'm also in Chicagoland, but have sent things to Competition Engineering in the past. Have also heard good things about Ollie's and Henry Schmidt at Supertec. I'd check and see what sort of turnaround times they have as well, as sometimes they can be long.

You may also want to check with some local shops (Perfect Power, Midwest Eurosport, etc.) to see who they've been using to get any local recommendations.

The MotoDelta boss here in Naperville has been using AutoMachine in St. Charles for his engine stuff for a number of years. For heads, Chris ran into cgarr (Craig) here on the forums via a mutal friend Jerry St. Germaine, formerly ran EuroEast in Michigan. Craig is a great guy and knows his stuff. I had him do my heads on my '87 911 3.2L and on my '79 3.2SS racecar. Does a fantastic job.

Another local guy Bob in Plainfield had Apex Eng. in Bensenville do his heads. Bob had very good things to say about Apex. Apparently Midwest Eurosport uses Apex for most everything so that's a good endorsement right there.

Wally at Werner works closely with Charles @ LN Engineering. Those two working together tells you that you can't go wrong with whatever they're selling!

Ditto on Apex, Bill is in Bensenville near O'hare
