Question: Popular early ('67) engine modifications?
 

I'm new to 911's and was wondering what some recommended horsepower modifications would be for a 2.0 Liter stock 911 motor? I'm planning to update the tensioners and would like to keep the car appearing as original (i.e. with the carburetors). I'm looking to get somewhere around 180 horsepower. Interested to hear suggestions on bigger bore cylinders, carburetors, camshafts, heads, valve sizes, camshafts and other powertrain improvements. The motor is not numbers matching, so I'm planning to make some modifications to the car during restoration (mostly engine).

Wayne lists a number of possibilities in his book you could investigate. One of the choices, 86mm p/c and 70.4mm crank puts you at 2.5L, a nice motor according to some of the gurus here. Getting into that case will be very $pendy. As this isn't a "numbers matching" issue, you may be better served getting a newer 3 or 3.2 that will get you better HP for what I understand is a lot less money.

John - Those multiple threads are quite a compilation of your work (to say nothing of the work itself). Many, many thanks for your painstaking documentation. Now what I'm thinking is, did he he fire 5 shots, or 6? In all of the excitement, I kind of lost track.... (Dirty Harry reference) But what did your final Piston/Cylinder combo end up being and what kind of heads did you use? If I recall, you didn't need to open up the 2.0 case bores at all, correct?

The very best modification one can do to any 2.0 engine is to make it into a 2.2. While it sounds somewhat modest, it makes a far bigger improvement in driveability than it sounds. :)
