Questions to ask mechanic before rebuild

My car is for sale in the classifieds and the engine is in parts and I'm researching having someone rebuild it as well. What are some good questions I need to ask or things I need to get in writing to protect myself and make sure I find the right person for the job thanks!

It doesn't sound like it's a good time to sell.

I agree with Bruce Your gonna get low balled with a motor in pieces, people will instantly try to knock $10,000 off your asking price. Go buy Wayne's book and read it before looking for a shop to rebuild your motor.

And its not that they are trying to low ball you -- but think about if
the engine is a total write-off -- used engines are going for way more than $10K.

You have to ask your self -- would I buy it for X with no knowledge of engine condition.

Time frame. Realistic time from when you drop it off to when its finished.

Warranty, if any.

Jon, have you given it any thought of doing the rebuild yourself or is that not an option? There's a few advantages and you will learn a hell of a lot about how these engines are put together.

Mike yes I have considered doing the rebuild myself and I had every intention of doing just that after reading Wayne's book, watching the Pfixit 3.6 movie several times, and acquiring/repairing all the parts--all the way up to the case half seal up when I quit the project due to time and motivation. I have young kids and my wife and I both work so time is difficult to come by. My wife is expecting in a month which will make time even less available. Car hasnt been running in 7 years. I just need a car that runs that i dont have to mess with at this time in my life.

I'd really love to do this project myself but its just the wrong time and Im tired of not having a running car.

Is it a 3.6 in an SC?
