Exhaust sprocket indexing off
I have a weird situation. I just finished rebuilding a M54 3.0 and the first time I ran it I got a P104 and P103 code with the live data showing 9 degrees of advance. Needless to say it was misfiring and would not idle.
I looked at the VANOs and for some reason I can get the exhaust sprocket to index a few degrees above the top of the head or a few degrees below, but not dead on. I had a good tech look at it and he suspects the timing chain is stretched. Has anyone experienced something like this? Before I tare off the oil pan and replace the timing chain, I would like some other opinions. Also I did not change the timing chain on this donor motor because most of the cylinders had their original factory hone. Any help is appreciated. |

Hi Jerry and welcome to the forum! I've included a link to our site's DIY tech articles on the E46 platform, there are a few articles pertaining to the VANOS. If you need additional info, feel free to post a Comment just below one of the articles and our tech will get back to you with specifics. Hope this is a bit helpful and best of luck!
