I am looking at buying an 89 335i and it idles fine all day but has fuel cut and sputters losing power when driving. The exhaust is also very loud and believe it is rusted. I believe the owner said the fuel pump had been replaced. What could be causing this?

Could be an ignition misfire or base engine issue. I would have the vehicle checked out before you buy it.
