E39 DSP stereo amp

I have a `97 528i with the DSP stereo. The Amp seems to have gone south, i.e. the radio comes on, can switch stations, bands, modes (tape, CD), but no sound comes out. When I hit the DSP switch nothing happens (normally would change the display to show equalizer pgms). I've checked the fuses (all OK).

Does anyone know the maker of this unit, a source for replacment (besides teh dealer), or substitutions (i.e. is it proprietary to BWM). Thanks in advance.

Best regards, M2

i believe that unit is made by alpine ( Ithink) But if you pull it out it will be labled right on the back, its located in the left rear wheel behind the panel real easy to get to... thosse things have been known to fry. Check in the phone book for your local stereo repair shop and see if they can repair.....

I know of a place here in Studio City, CA. good luck called International Radio that has been known to repair these

Thanks, Javier -

As it turn out, there is a tech bulletin out on that part/problem. Over the wekend, the battery went dead. After jump starting it and driving a bit to charge the batt., lo and behold, the amp was back. Figuring that I had a ground fault/short of some sort (which would hopefully be cheaper than replacing amp@$465+labor), I took it in to the shop, who found the service bulletin, which described the sypmptoms perfectly- 'amp goes out and then eats battery a few days later'. Merde.

The amp is proprietary to BMW (It may, in fact, be suppied by Alpine, but -). I have a nephew who is an installer at Tweeters, and he said it was a mother - 9 channels, 14 speakers, etc, and replacing it with aftermarket stuff is a bit of a $$ re-engineering effort. BMW - Batter My Wallet. Arg!

I'm having the same problem. It has not worked for a week and battery is still fine? What is best way to troubleshoot. Disconnect battery and reconnect? Are all radio fuses in glovebox? What about the relay in the trunk? I have the wagon - 2000 528i. Any fuse on back of radio?
