1987 535is Starter Troubleshooting
Looking for some opinion and input before I pull the trigger on this one and rework this job. I had a bad starter on my 1987 535is, E28 vehicle with a manual transmission. Starter is up on top and impossible to get to. Drained coolant, removed the intake and depressurized the fuel system to gain access to the starter. Installed a rebuilt stock starter purchased at a local parts house. Unit was on the shelf for years but still sealed in box. Post starter installation and interference replacement, I get nothing when I go to start. The solenoid does not fire, the starter does not spin. I have 12+ volts at the battery. I believe all grounds are good. I have 12+ volts at pin 30 of the starter. I have 10.5+ volts at pin 50 of the starter when I go to start with the ignition switch. I have 8+ volts at pin 11 of the diagnostic plug and 10+volts at pin 11 with the ignition switch at start. Finally, I have 11+ volts at pin 13 of the diagnostic plug with the ignition switch at start. Based on this the starter should function as normal, but does not. Wondering if there is any other check or troubleshooting I can do before I tear into everything again. I am leaning toward the problem being a bad rebuilt starter but don't want to rip it back out to find that it is something else and the rip out was not necessary. Also at about $4.00 a pop (x 6) I do not want to replace the intake gaskets again. The ones in there now are new but they have been compressed. Any thoughts and comments are appreciated. Thanks
