Power to rear hatch in wagon

Visitor from e46 Forum, wondering if problem might be common as there are a lot more 5-series wagons than 3-series wagons.

New (to me) e46 325iT.

Rear defrost and wiper worked during pre-purchase inspection, but failed a week or two later.

The rear hatch electric lock and interior lights still work. I have not checked the backup and brake lights in the rear hatch yet to see if they still work.

I checked the three fuses that power the defrost and rear wiper. All good. The wires through the hinge cavity look undamaged from the outside, and they don't have sharp kinks like the e36 trunk lid wires, so I would not expect them to fail.

Anyone else had this problem?

Thanks.
