Question on Crankshaft Pulley Replacement

I have a 2007 525xi with the N52 engine. I suspect the front main seal is leaking. What special tools do I need to replace the seal? Do you have any pictures oulining this procedure like above? Any special things to watch out for?

There is a special seal puller and installer. As well as a sealant that has to be injected. I would grab a repair manual. It will have the procedure, special tools and torque specs.

Give our parts specialists a call at 1-888-280-7799.

This is the bad seal. As you can see it is badly chewed up.

Just a wider view...

This is the special seal puller installed. The socket bolts are install where the primary drive hub was installed. The gold sheet metal screws are screwed into the seal.

Cranking on the center bolt, you can see the seal coming out.

I pulled the radiator out after I saw some leaves between radiator and a/c front coil. It also gave me a great deal more room without concern of damaging the radiator. the manual just says protect radiator. Very glad I pulled it out, it was packed with dirt and grime.

Here is the install tool. After I cleaned seal contact surface and applied sealant primer, per manual. Also, said to apply oil on hub to provide lubricant for seal. The manual talks about alignment detents to line-up seal. I did not have the detents in housing.

Seal with plastic guide. Comes with the seal.

Seal in position, ready to be installed.

Driver in place, just crank nut, nice and slow and steady.

Installed Seal.

Sealant and primer. Considerably cheaper than Loctite products. Also, the sealant and primer listed in manual is not sold by Loctite in the U.S. Also, the BMW dealer will potentially provide a product that requires a $1,000.00 UV light to cure sealant.

All finished. Now put it all back together.

Project took me about 5 hours total. But I cleaned radiator, cleaned VANOS solenoids. None of which was included in my $2,400.00 quote.

Also, spent about 3 hours trying to find sealant without buying 300ml caulk tube for $115.00.

Also, I substituted M8-16mm screws with socket head screws. $6.12 for 10. BMW wanted $5.36 for one.
