1988 635csi opinions

I recently sold my 1979 911SC Porsche and am looking for a replacement fun vehicle (non-daily driver). I have always liked the looks of the 635csi's and have found one here in the S.F. Bay Area. It is a 1988 with 114,000 miles on the clock. The interior is a 9, grey leather with all the bells & whistles. The exterior is red and probably an 8 1/2. Paint is excellent but with a few frontal chips. Been BMW serviced since new with full records. It's an automatic (my wife never could be a relief driver with the Porsche 5-speed) so I won't mind the auto tranny.

Kelly blue book shows private party blue book at $6,200 and Edmunds shows $5,500. They are asking $8,500 (dropped from $9,500.) The car is in excellent condition and they do get more for cars, here in the bay area.

So what do you BMW guru's think? Is this a problem-ridden model, is the automatic tranny a problem. How fast is the 3.5 engine (I am not expecting Porsche 911 fast) but fun-fast would be nice thanks for any opinions you guys can share.

Bill, I think the market for that car is soft so I'd be careful on the price. The 3.5 is a solid motor and if maintained well has a pretty good record. It's not that fast but it's smooth and handling is
good. The main thing you'll notice is the handling differences from your 911, much less tail happy but the understeer might surprise you.
If you get full records with the car that's a big plus, check carefully for body work etc.
Hopefully more experienced owners will check in.

I had an 87 for 10 years and sold it 6 years ago with 80,000 on the clock. NH has a short season so that accounts for the low mileage since mine barely saw rain, let alone snow. On a hot summer night with all of the stars lighting the way, moon roof opened and the throttle resting at 100 m.p.h.; you'd swear you died and went to heaven. A light sporty vehicle it is not, but if you have a long way to go, plenty of open road, and a series of long twisties ahead--WOW!

If you plan on keeping it; $8K is cheap if it is as clean as you say.
Send a PIC!
