e46 zf to gm swap

aloha, i have a 2000 323i e46 wagon with the dreaded no reverse syndrome. i'm thinking to save on repair by simply installing a used salvage unit. if i replace it with the a zf like i have now, who knows how long it will work. however, if i replace it with a gm trans, i can clean the valve body, and install a new reverse solenoid on the bench, and have a in the car repairable trans from now on. do they interchange directly?? i know this car came with both new. cheers, geoff
