Replacing Original '07 Battery
Well my original battery in my 12S is finally giving me some problems. It started fine the other day when I took the bike out of storage, but when I stopped to take some photos, the bike was hesitant to start.
I managed to pick up a couple of Shorai battery's a couple of years ago when one of the vendors decided to blow them out for $50 each. I bought two......one for my R100 and the other for my ridem lawnmower. The vendor did not have any to fit my R12's. When I removed the stock battery I compared it to the Shorai's that I have. The Shorai was a little wider, but it was a fair amount taller. I decided to give it a try and to my amazement, I managed to fit a Shorai LFX24L3 into the battery holder of the 12S. I could not use the stock hold down strap, so I fashioned a strap out of some webbing I had laying around by looping it around the frame under the battery and then securing it at the top with the two bolts for the tank centre bodywork and the test plug. Shorai recommends a 21Ah battery for the 12S, so this one will give me 24Ah's and a CCA of 360Amps! It seems to work really well, and best of all it didn't cost me $120 to replace the stock battery. 07?
How many chickens were slaughtered in the name of the dark lord to get your battery to last 12 years?! |

I had a battery in a Honda Civic go 10 years. And that was long before there were smart battery chargers! I probably owe the dark lord something, but I have not made any real deals so far! Cheers |
Has anyone tried a Shorai LFX24L3-BS12 ( spec sheet shows a case width of 86mm ) in an R1100S ?
The Westco battery has a measured width of 75mm. I'm using a Shorai LFX21L6-BS12 (spec sheet shows a case width of 82mm ) , and a measured case width of 81mm. |
Fitted an LFX18A1-BS12 to my BCR Replika and had a LFX21L6-BS12 in other R1100s..brilliant battery.

A 14Ah (AGM) battery is specified for the R12S in our Rider’s Manual. Wonder why Shorai would specify such a large capacity replacement at 21Ah? I guess, cause they can!
Looks like a snug fit, well done getting it in & thanks for the info. Cheers! |
Nice tidy install... I like how the terminal rings are stacked in order... :)

Sometimes it's not easy mounting any kind of power distribution module. Cheers |

Well it seems though the dark lord has frowned upon my jesting and finally terminated my Shorai.
The Shorai has had a slow discharge for the last 3 years and I thought I'd try something else so I opted for an Anti Gravity ATX-12RS. It has a some type of self jumping reserve I thought was nifty and according to the other geeks, on ADV, the cells are made very well. Interestingly enough, the first Shorai I purchased for my airhead, in 2013, seems to still be ok, but it's been doing nothing but sitting the last 4 years with the bike being repaired around it. We shall see soon... |
The Beast is back!!!
The old Frankensteined R100RS is back!
I didn't have the time to put everything back together on my own so boxer2valve.com Parts for BMW Motorcycles in Hendersonville got it back in running condition for me. It's been an ongoing project for me that got put on the backburner after having kids. Here is the good / unexpected news... The Shorai still works! It has never ever been on a tender. Just sat for 4 years neglected and held a charge. We'll see how it holds up. |
