Oil level (hide and seek)

I reckon so. I just didn't know what, if anything I was risking by having too much of a good thing. Anyway, a good day-long, "spirited" run into West (bg) Virgina and back pretty much takes care of any excess oil lurking around in the engine.

As a relative newbie to this bike it sounds like there are quite a few rules that would be good to know.

I've heard later models drain oil to read in the sight glass better than previously. Anybody know when that change took place?

Mostly the benefit of 'red dot' oil level, is to reduce the amount of blow by that coats the inside of our airboxes.
Haven't noticed the oil light glowing, even during extended 5k - 7k running ( it is however, possible that it did light up, but I'm sure I was busy doing something important during those times ).

My dealer does this as well Is there any way to syringe off some oil without using the drain bolt? I am thinking about long tube via the oil filler hole.

As a relatively new S pilot I must admit I find the oil level nothing short of astounding in it's fluctuation, though the cooler pr valve would explain some of that :-) Having always ridden Jap machines the boxer is certainly proving, ahem, interesting, good news being that I've finished the rebuild, clutch, heads, seals, exhaust, blah blah blah.


Seth, what's tha paint code under your seat for your bike as I really really like that colour, I know it's pacific metallic blue, but don't know the code ?

The color is one of the first things that I noticed when I first saw the bike at the dealer. To me the S is already a very attractive bike just because of its shape, but then to finish it in a color like this just puts it over the top. I have definitely been enjoying it ever since.

I was thinking simpler than that - it's safer to fill to the middle of the sight glass to prevent overfilling should there be oil trapped up in the cooler. The bike doesn't need the oil level right at the top of the red circle, and doing so just risks over-filling the engine.

But I like your reasoning better. Sounds more technical.

As promised, I had a look and the paint color is: 744
At least that's what is says on the little sticker under the seat near the tire plug kit.
If that isn't the right sort of number, let me know and I'll have another look.

Um, well, I think the idea is that one doesn't accept the veracity of the sight glass, without first being *sure* that the engine has been thoroughly temperature cycled ( determined by feel - the oil cooler is just as hot on the sight window side [ right hand side looking at the headlight ] just touch the bottom of it - if you can't touch it for more than a second, your prolly all right.
Then park it on it’s side right away for, oh, 10 minutes or so, put it on the center stand, and look at it in the morning. If you look at it after only 10 minutes on the center stand, the value will be off by the amount of air mixed in with the oil - after an overnight ( well prolly sooner, but that’s not where I’m headed ) sit it will all be settled out.
And reasonably accurate.

Yeah, that's bascially my ritual after a long ride. Still don't get a consistent reading though.
