SQUID
A "Squid" is a type of biker - we can all remember seeing at least one: They are the fringe of the sportbike crowd - the hotdogs, the show-offs. The origin of the term "Squid" is unknown, but some theorize that it describes the multi-colored suits they wear on their multicolored bikes. Others maintain that "Squid" is a contraction of the phrase "squished kid". Or maybe its how they squirt through traffic the same way a sea-going squid jerks and darts around coral reefs. Note the word "jerk."

DONKEY BIKE

Origination on this Pelican board. Coined by someone named CarlosT to describe the characteristics of his R1100S. I think he felt it was like riding this...

The reason for the term squid that I have heard is: sure their fast in the straights, but find them in the twisties and their all over the place like a 'road squid'.

A squid is a creature that moves quickly in a straight line but must slow down almost completely to change direction.

Hi,

I'd read the term in the "magazines" some time ago as a contraction of "squirrel" and "kid;" therefore, etc., thusly, hence, ergo, and i.e., the term squid.

Later, BB

I can't recall exactly what "squid" was derived from, but there were a couple other familiar terms that might have come out during the same period. You're probably already familiar with these. The term "FMF", that is the name of a very familiar motorcycle exhaust and accessory manufacturer, www.fmfracing.com, coined it's name from a term that was started in the early seventies. There was a motocross track in Southern California called Indian Dunes that I used to race at where people used to say "That's one FMF" which meant "Fast Mother Flucker". It was Donnie Emler that was a local regular around 1970 that took that term and built a multi million dollar company around it.

There was also another familiar term we used all the time back then too, which was "WFO". Of course, it stood for something similar to the other one I mentioned, which was "Wide Flucking Open". That one was so widely used that our parents even used it all the time thinking it meant "Wide Full Open". They always wondered why we chuckled every time they said that. I seem to recall telling my folks that FMF meant "Fast Man Friday" or something like that.

I think Donkeybike was board member Carlos' coining. It appears to mean large, slow, unagile bike, which he declared the S to be after trading it for a Falco.
