Amsoil ?
Do any of you have experience w/ Amsoil synthetic engine oil?
I know the owners manual suggests non synthetic for the first 6K miles, but they do offer synthetic. Not sure if the bmw syn is 100% syn, or a blend. I'm thinking of running Amsoil MC oil 20-50 with the next 7k change. |

Oil is like religion... and evryone seems to have their own favorite... Many many many oil threads and arguments. Buy good oil, keep it changed and you will be OK. Even if you run that stuff.

I swear by Amsoil. It's in my cars, in my bikes. I would highly recommend it.

I usually use 20w50 during the summer months. Mobil 1 20w50 V-twin to be exact, when I can find it. If not, I use Mobil 1 15w50
The good thing to keep in mind about Mobil 1 15w50 is that it is available everywhere, and at Wal-Mart or K-Mart the 5-quart jugs are < $25. But, like Bill says, everyone has their own favorite. You can most likely put the most obscure oil found at The Dollar Store into the engine and it won't hurt it, as long as you change it once in a while... And, when you are low on oil, better to mix brands or fossil/synthetic rather than being low while you ride all over looking for "Your Brand" in some town like Bluff or Mexican Hat Utah...

Favorites aside, which is like blonds or red heads...
Amsoil synthetic has significant advantages like cooler running, better heat shear, potential for longer life, and others. There is a pretty technical 'white paper' on the Amsoil site. I also agree on the weight: the syn 20-50 weight is what already runs in my bikes. |

Amsoil is no better than other quality synthetics, regardless of their marketing propoganda.

I was wondering who'd be the first to unload on that white paper ck. I've read it but I believe Amsoil paid for it. My biggest concern about my oil is what it does for me during initial startup. Will I still have some protection right ther and now.

My car takes Synthetic 0w40 and uses approx 600 mls every 2k miles. I'm not too worried about startup protection!

From reading this paper, it would appear the we are all wasting money of the high priced syn motor iol. Any comments on this little jewel of a paper?

0-40 in the (11 to 1) R11S in the winter 15-50 in the summer. 20w50 in the (10.5 to 1)77S. Mobil 1 always now........except the 10-60 stuff in the (12.5 to 1)HP2. All of it is synthetic.

Oh goodie, a oil thread. It's been a while.
I'm by no means an expert or and engineer, but as I understand it.... Full synthetic oil is different than a true 100% synthetic oil. Amsoil is 100% synthetic, i believe for an oil to be "Full Synthetic" it only needs to be 60% synthetic. I know Amsoil is 100% synthetic, Mobile 1 might be as well. I'm pretty sure the rest of the full synthetic oils listed in the white paper are only partially synthetic. Synthetic oils are much better than mineral oils because they do not break down over time and form sludge, the black **** that we all drain from the oilpan. Instead, synthetic oil retains it's lubrication properties, but slowly evaporate due to the heat. So the oil does not wear out like mineral oils, but must be topped off every few thousand miles. Again, this is what I have been told, if I am wrong, please correct me. Spectro oil is what BMW relables as BMW oil. Every test I have ever seen it's near the bottom of the performance chart. Mobile one is always near the top, Amsoil is always above that. It could be snake oil, but I'm always been impressed by the results in my cars and bikes.

Excellent smallj, and I believe correct. Most important on the difference between Synthetic (full) and 100% synthetic. HD private labeled a synthetic oil from Chevron (?), and it was only 60% syn.
100% Syn oil also improves cooling, and really improves heat shear, the breakdown of the oil where it doesn't stick to the metal as well. |
