R1200S Tail bag mounting point kludge

My problem: I could'nt find anywhere on the R1200S to attach the rear mounting straps for my Motofizz tail bag. I didn't want the straps to wear on the paint, and wanted more security than wrapping the rear straps under the pillion seat would afford (my bag is a little too big for that).

Now I can use my Motofizz bag and my dry bag (if need be) at the same time, without too much concern.

The pillion cover has mounting straps on the underside, no need for that "nice" bracket.

edit: shreddr: Do you even bother to read posts before you respond?

The rear of the bag goes beyond the pillion cover. It is not secure enough. That wont work.

This is one of the major hassels with a tail mounted exhaust. The heat from the exhaust pervents the normal solutions.

What model bag is that Andrew. Looks like a good one.

um..yeah i do,

do you ever bother to get your pictures lined up right so it doesn't take a 42" monitor to read you entire post? I have no doubt as to what the A stands for in AndrewA

Nice solution, if it really works. My experience is that it takes a pretty good force to hold a loaded tail bag in place on bumpy roads - a lot more force than you're likely to be able to maintain with that thin metal bracket cantilevered like this.

Simple, easy and works. Nice.

Are you a 12 year old with ADD?

Please read and try to understand posts before you respond. It' really not that hard.

If you have questions, I'm sure that they can be answered.

It's the Motofizz (small). Great bag, which would be even greater if it were waterproof. It' got some nice features which get used all of the time; like the water bottle holders and the inner flap under the cover to hold a rain jacket.
It sits low on the bike, so I can use it all of the time - it expands sideways to hold enough gear for a weekend.

We'll see. It's just 1/8" aluminum stock that I got awhile ago from HD, held with two of the rear license plate M5 bolts. It seems rugged enough to stop the bag from swaying, and allows enough tension to keep the straps tight.

Andrew;

Watch where the sides of the bag might contact the bodywork and also where it contacts above the taillight.

I have a BMW tail bag and used it for the first time last weekend..........now I have to try and polish out the marks it left.

If only I had put some Mac Tac down before my ride..........doh.........
Cheers

That's what I meant about under tail exhaust, Andrew. It looks like you have adapted and pressed on.

Guest24 08-31-2009 05:39 AM

This is your other choice.:D It also serves as a grill in hot climates. and, it's hell for the pillion rider. lol

That's a nice rack, but unfortunately it would dig into my Ohlins/Hyperpro/whatever Savings Fund too much.

it is pricey, but very sturdy.

I used to worry about that sort of **** with little scuffs, but figured as I was going to keep this bike and that on the IOM this year all the best looking bikes looked like they had been ridden and weren't trailer queens that patina is an asset and that paint can always be replaced. Long live scuffs;);)....after 65,000 kms in a year there should be wear and tear
