OT: need suggestions on good roads in las vegas area

hey folks,

i'm making a trip to vegas to see my brother. we have only one day to ride so i wanted to make sure there is no time wasted in finding some roads. although he's been living in vegas for some time now, he hasn't had a lot of riding time due to his schedule and his family obligations. so i figured i'd ask you guys...

can anyone recommend some good routes? we'd be starting off in henderson, NV. and we'd be up for a 300mi round trip (if we can stand the heat)...

thanks

Ride out to Henderson/Boulder, Russ, and then down to the lake on SR166 North and then on 167 North-East (Northshore Road)... although the speed limit is relatively low, I have rarely seen any LEO's...

That's about it for close to Vegas... at least from what I know...

We almost tore your neighborhood apart, Craig... but then, we thought better of it... after I dragged the Banditos into your little town last year, I did nt want to top it off by dragging Sergio there as well... you understand!

Hey, do you ever ride around the Fishlake area?... from the Fremont Junction on down... that seems to be a nice ride... good pavement for the most part and very little traffic... we thoroughly enjoyed it! You could ride through Torrey, Hanksville and then back... which, I am sure, you already know...

Go to Boulder City, then towards the damn, turn onto SR 166 North (toll rd, bikes are around $5), follow around until SR 147 then to SR 166 (both Northshore Rd) per agypsy suggestion. After clearing the lake area there are usually few LEO's, especially on week days. Lots of curves, some are deceiving, so be smart. Go to Overton for snacks, fuel. Then head back and turn right on SR40/169 and head for Valley of Fire state park. Lots of twisties but be careful, sometimes has gravel in corners form cars and any recent rains. Will end up back at I15 and a long jaunt back to Vegas. Nice scenery along the way until back at I15.

I rode to Lake Mead and also the Hoover damn and came back through the Valley of fire I think - unfortunately I was on a fat boy but it was a cool ride - just a bit of a trek to get there if I remember rightly. 500miles. Really scenic country.

Wake up early and get an early start. After you reach Vegas from the Valley of Fire, swing Northwest and do the Mt. Charleston loop. Nice twisties and the scenery changes from Desert to Mountain so fast it is truly magical. The sign for the Las Vegas Ski Club kills me every time...but it is real!

FYI: I usually do the VOF loop in the opposite direction. It gets the 45 minutes of boring highway out of the way in the beginning of the trip - kind of like climbing that first hill on a roller coaster. The views and vistas from there on are spectacular.

If you're up for 400 miles instead of 300 you can make it to Zion NP and back.

Of course! One of my favorite rides. It's about 70 miles from Green River to the cutoff to hwy 72, but the beautiful sweepers, the lack of people, and green scenery. It's quite nice. The whole ride from there, to Loa, then Torrey and 12 over to Boulder/Escalante is world class. You feel like you own the road there.

Kind of nice over there huh Sergio? Having a road all to oneself. Of course, if you break down, you're screwed!

I know there is a small AdvRider rally in Torrey every year that could be fun.

From Henderson, that is a good route to start out with. But, do NOT take the roads through Park Service areas for granted!! The Rangers there (and through Red Rock Canyon west of Vegas) are on a mission to keep the two wheeled (read squid) crowd under control and do not have any tolerance for bikes at speed. Northshore Rd. is good up to just north of Cauville Bay turnoff but between construction and bumps, is poor farther north. But, if you put up with it, it is worth it, as BMWSaint points out below, cutting off at VOF (which lies north of the turnoffs to Echo Bay and Overton Beach but before the town of Overton) and touring through that area. Be sure to turn off the main road and head toward the Visitors Center ...stay on that road (i.e. toward Mouses Tank and beyond) till it ends about 10 miles up and you will be rewarded visually and physically....very nice twisties. Backtrack and head out of VOF to the south. It is a bit of jaunt to cut over to the Mt. Charleston area from there, but the cooler temps once you get up to the mountain make it all worth it. Start the day early, very early. So in essence, I would go in the direction opposite to Saint's tip below if you want to hit Charleston. If you need further clarification...drop me a line.

Brock took me on my rented GS out to Valley of Fire a few years ago and it was awesome. I got married there a year later and also got a monster ticket there by U.S. Park Police. It started out at $435 for 72 in a 50 zone, but he cut it down and it was "only" $285. Be careful out there. I wasn't paying attention to my radar detector and it was an expensive mistake.

thanks for all the advice! everyone was spot on with all the tips...you guys rock!

we rode out today (lmonday) . we did mt charleston and VOF. roads through VOF were amazing. we got a late start and decided to do Mt C first since it was so freakin hot (we didn't get on the road until 1pm) we figured we'd go for some higher elevation first to escape the heat. lots of cager's and LEO's on the way to Mt C so it wasn't the best ride but it was nice and cool indeed. we had lunch at the top and it was so packed it took almost 2 hrs before we left the restaurant. well by the time we made it to I15 it was still scorching.

got onto NV169 and the sun was going down. so we were riding in the dark through most of NV167 but still very fun. there were patches of loose gravel and construction on the northern half of 167 but someone was courteous enough to put up signs saying "pavement ends" so there really weren't any surprises...

thanks again
