HP2 Dreaming

no not the HP2S, I am already one up on one of those!

i am getting my dirt jones on, and I am thinking this might be the ticket to add to the stable, what do you think?

I would have to leave it stock of course!

Those are cool, but I for the life of me I can't figure out what to use it for other than hauling a$$ down a dirt road, too heavy for single track/ trail riding. We were riding some technical rocky stuff last weekend and I was wishing my G650 was a 225lb 250cc dirt bike.

You have mentioned dirt riding several times in the past, does the area you live in have much to offer in for a dual sport bike? I know squat about NJ.

jersey is probably one of the most off-road UNfriendly states in the nation. I think there is actually one state park that allows off road vehicles (Pine Barrens) the rest is pretty much verbotten. I am close to the Pennsy border though, and there isn't much they don't allow, so I ought to be able to find some cool fire roads. I guess I think an HP2 or god forbid GS would at least allow me to ride at a decent clip to get to a place to actually get it dirty. I think a DRZ would be more off road worthy, but pretty much a drag on any kind of highway.

Jeff, it seems to me that the worst punishment for you is not a state park where off road bikes are verboten, but a verdict that you have to leave a bike of yours 100% stock.

The HP2 above looks good.

Not so much... it comfortably does about 75mph all day long (if you have a decent seat) and with the right suspension setup is actually VERY capable in off-road conditions. Mine tops out at 101mph. 15/44.

One of the regulars in our off road riding group has a DRZ-400 SM. He swaps back and forth between his street wheels/tires and his dirt wheels/tires depending on the ride. Brian (Lightfighter) and him are riding to Montana this summer. Every time we ride I leave wanting a DRZ-400. They just seem like the perfect dual sport bike, and 75-80 MPH is no problem for them. I am anxious to hear how his does on this long trip this summer. Touring on a 400cc bike is something I would normally not consider. I do believe he is shopping for a new seat for it. Also he is very fit, and an exceptional dirt rider, that probably helps.

good to know Ralf, I do like the DRZ alot, I suppose I should ride one. also having a DRZ wouldn't make me question the need for the R12S, whereas the HP2 or GS might.

Have fun trying to pull a 400 lb HP out of the mud!!!After a long day trail riding imagine trying to pick up a big bike with a 36 odd inch seat.I just picked up a 07 DRZ 400s for 1400 bucks,I can drop it and not worry about the damage. It looks tiny compared to the XR650L I am now selling

Jeff;

I think that HP2 is just too big. And I think a DRZ is too underpowered.

I like some of the newer KTM dual sport bikes. But I will keep my old KTM 520 EXC as it is still great in the bush and I have 17" road wheels for it.

Cheers

I do like the HP2E, that one looks like it is Max BMW's stock, is it one of their old racers?

PS: what about a Husky, this cross country 630 looks like a jolly nice dual purpose bike?

yeah it does, but I can't do "new" anymore. the thought of a cool dual sport for $1400 is very appealing!

as much as i like the real dirt bikes that are road capable, they look so out of place on the road it's not even funny. although the bikes like the G650 are middle of the road for both applications, it doesn't look out of place on the road. it's weird i know

That's what I got, except mine wears dirt shoes. Those are some pretty sweet motard wheels. It has a goofy air shock/spring for rear suspension, I am about to toss mine when Roger gets my Ohlins in. Here I am trying not to fall.

I would go for the bigger wheels, I don't need motard, I got HP-R12S!

I was wondering about that shock, I prefer the correct spring to one size fits all. did you do the fork swap or was that somebody else?

Forks are fine on the G650 Xchallenge, my brother did the fork swap on a F650GS.

Not a lot of folks knew about the G650 X Challenge, another BMW marketing blunder. I saw one in the parking lot at work and thought, wow, that looks cool. I looked around and there was one in San Diego with 75 miles for $5200. I called Ralf, he confirmed it looked good, and I drove out to San Diego and bought it. I love it.
