Starter for 1100s

I have a question for all you guys. How can I tell if the starter on my bike needs replaced or can I just replace parts inside it? If you buy parts and rebuild it the cost is about the same. I dont want to take it out and put it back in more than one time.

Thanks for any help BARRY

Ditto.

The starter "repair kit" on bikebandit is 12 bucks.

I think the starter is some sort of Valeo made model that is very common on cheap Peugeot cars. If you live in europe you can certainly find one for a good rebate.

The Valeo Starter TuneUp Kit + looks like a great way to go assuming the expensive bits are still good and you don't have a bad solenoid, armature, starter drive or magnet housing... the obvious catch is (best case) you aren't going to know for certain until you have the starter out and disassembled. And after you change out those parts you won't know for certain if you fixed the real problem until you put it back in your bike and try it... and if it works then the question will be which of the parts you didn't replace will fail... more importantly when and where that failure occurs. (It probably won't be in your garage)

IMHO the shortest, least aggravating path is to just buy a new one... see page 2 of the link independent provided.. $189 for a new Valeo OE unit.

Bring it to someone who repairs car starters. It can be rebuild for short money.

Barry, if you find you need a replacement, I've got one from a 2002 with 20k miles on it... I don't know how many cranks that is, exactly...

I installed a new gel battery first thinking this was my problem. (it was time). The starter turns over 3 or 4 times then stops. I took the starter out and took it to Auto Zone where they put it on there machine . It said it was junk but didn't say what is junk on it.

Are a 2000 and a 2002 starter the same?

I don't know how reliable BeemerBoneyard.com is for parts cross-referencing, but they suggest that the starter for all R1100/R1150/R1200C bikes are the same.

So it was OK until you installed a new battery? If so I would reevaluate your conclusion. A starter can "go bad" and draw high amps, or loose some coil continuity making it weak, or bearings can wear, causing rotor strike.

But I think these are RARE on these starters, I wouldn't trust the Auto Zone guy to even identify it as a starter, let along give a good diagnostic conclusion.

That said, if it started AFTER battery replacement, I would connect jumper cables from a known good battery to the bike, and see what it does then. And you can jump it at the back of the starter, or cheat and remove the seat and side panels enough to contact the + battery terminal with a screwdriver, being careful not to contact the frame, then hook the + cable to the screwdriver, and the - cable to the frame somewhere.

Have there been many cases of starters going bad on this board? I can't remember reading any.

I'm with Richard. It may be something else.

...is there any reason not to set a car battery on the ground just left of the bike & jump right to the starter? It would seem to be safer than dodging bits of frame & such.

Mentioned that first, the other isn't that hard to do either, just my long winded verbal "pictorial" makes it seem so.

Hah... OK.

Well, Barry, if you need one, you have a PM, but I'd hate to have you install another starter just to have it do the same thing.

REALLY? I would have expected a new starter to be way more than that.

It has not started at all with the new battery. I have already done the different battery test and got the same , turns over a couple times and quits.

I broke my starter when i made both cylindars fire at the same time because of a cam sprocket mishap,(my brain). I broke the teeth on the pinion and bendex spring. Look at the type of starter.
My 03 bcr used the same as some italian bikes. I googled the starter and found an italian bike shop that had starter parts. bmw wanted to sell me the whole starter. the parts cost $70 from the bike shop and $35 for a shop to install the gear.
