Anyone Here Still Buy New Motorcycles Anymore

Seems people used to do it, and were much more into motorcycles. Now, it's all quiet. I would have thought with the economic upturn that some would be spending...

Of course, this board is quiet also...

Just curious. If you have plans to get something - share it!

My last new motorcycle was purchased in 1973; so, nope I do not purchase new anymore. There are far too many used, but not used up motorcycles available. The new BMW R1200RS tempts me but if I sold all my current bikes to buy the RS I'd still not have enough cash ( five BMW's presently reside in my garage ), besides it's more about the ride than what I am riding.

New Bikes

CK,

Well, since you asked, I had purchased a few bikes. I normally do not announce to the world of my purchases; KTM 1290R, Ducati Monster S4RS, and a Fat Boy. I still have my R1100S and ride it often but the KTM is way more fun. What can I say...

CK,

From my perspective it seems that we are in an era where old stuff is really good, useful advances in technology have ceased as far as I am concerned.

A 1995 Motorcyle was much better than a 1985 motorcycle, and a 2005 was much better than the 1995. However I don't think a 2017 is any better than a 2007.

I guess if you are into a bunch of electronic bull****, which I'm not, new bikes are appealing.

Why should I spend 20K on a new bike when I can get a second hand bike for 10K that already has lots of upgrades from the previous owner and does exactly what I want. I was just searching ADV for a triple black R1200GS.

Add to that I'm getting old and they don't make anything I want anymore.

In 50+ years of riding & owning all kinds of bikes I've never owned a new one & do all of my own wrenching, sorta like a dealers worst nightmare I guess.

2014 Honda VFR800FD

I'm thinking of getting one of these, a new 2014 leftover.

But, my brother has a '91 VFR750 with upgraded suspension bits that he wants to give to me. It is mint. The functional difference between them then and now is virtually nothing but electronics, ABS and TC, which renders even considering paying for a new one verses picking up a free one in perfect shape, kinda nutty.

I'm on a casual quest for the ONE perfect bike and will then cull the herd. The VFR800FD is close to filling the bill. The one serious shortcoming is power. My Buell's massive and never ending torque (and 420 lb. weight) have spoiled me. The power is almost overwhelming when you crank on it in the middle gears. Overwhelming in a delightful way. I'd have a hard time living without it.

I'm a new bike purchaser. I've had a bunch of them. The R1100s is my first used bike since 2003 (and that one only had 800 miles). Right now I have a 2015 Road King and a 2015 FZ09 in the garage alongside the R1100S. Both of the other bikes were purchased new. Not to say there's anything wrong with buying used and I think it's better financially, it's just what I've done for the last 20 years or so and 15 bikes.

Rapid Dog 04-14-2017 12:46 PM

...I've only bought three new bikes in 50 years...
1969 Hodaka ACE 90 - Bud Ekins
1978 R100 Special - Ozzie's BMW
2001 R1100S - RPM Cycles

...everything else was cheaper.

Alfa145V6 04-14-2017 02:33 PM

I have bought three new.
R1100RT, K1200RS, K1300S. All sold on.
My present garage has three secondhand.
R1100S, R1200S, HP2Sport.
I'm sorely tempted by a Ducati 1299 Panigale. I have only sat on one so far, will have a test ride when it's warmer. I will thrash it to 30% of its ability which will be 100% of my ability, but the smile on my face will stop me from worrying about any chicken strips on the tyres!

No, never again!

SergioK 04-14-2017 04:21 PM

I bought my HP2 Sport new because well, I was in a place where I could blow $30k on a new motorcycle. Now, there's nothing that tugs at my heartstrings or my pocketbook that makes me want to lay out the cash for a new bike. And, like Rob said, nothing new that really is any better than what's been offered over the past ten years.

maverickma 04-14-2017 08:43 PM

I'm with Sergio, all the bikes out there just don't do it for me. My last new bike was a 2009 XR650L. Sold it last year. I want to like the R1200RS, but I just don't.

square4man 04-15-2017 05:24 AM

Looks like I'm part of the majority here. I had started with a new 71 T125 Suzuki, traded on a 72 DS7 Yamaha then a 72 CB450 then a 74 CB750 then the 75 Z1. It seems as a new rider my income was growing with my need to go faster and motorcycle manufacturers had the right products. I then bought a 59 R26 for restoration. Great project and it fueled my appreciation for fundamental motorcycles. I also appreciated motorcycling a a different level. Well that Z1 was the last new bike and a progression of older English, Italian and German bikes (as well as the need to go a little slower) has brought me to my current 04 S. I don't need a bike that interfaces with my iPhone or fitbit or has mind control suspension/engine/traction options although I appreciate the technology as time marches on. As I approach 50 years in this sport the S fills the bill perfectly.

I have / had two R1100S's. A 1999 that I bought new and still have. And a 2000 that I bought used. just lost the 2000 in a not at fault accident last November. used the insurance money to buy virtually that exact VFR. a used 2015 with 4900 kms. new only the R1200RS caught my eye but just too much money.

BigDav 04-15-2017 05:29 AM

I use to only buy new. Well, not exactly true. I had a few "to good to be true" used bikes come through my garage.

My 2001 R1100s is the last bike I've purchased. There's not much that has come out since then that "I had to have"

Even though I've been toying with a new Motus. I don't think the economy is anywhere near a rebound (more likely totally propped up with zero interest rates) so I have a hard time parting with $35k+

I never bought new bikes either. For me, bike purchase has to do with history of the model, it's performance and how hard it tugs on my emotional strings. That's why I have a BCR, 2 Bimotas and a Cagiva. The next bike to join the line up will be an Aprilia, either a Gen 1 RSV or Gen1/Gen2 Tuono. I like the new RS but I don't think it will get enough use to justify the purchase.

dlong 04-15-2017 12:13 PM

Bought new: '73 R65, '74 Moto Guzzi V7 Sport, '83 FJ1100, '87 Ducati Laguna Seca, '90 R1100RS, '04 BCR

Bought used: '60ish Norton Atlas, '74 R90Sx2, "78? Moto Guzzi LeMans, '05 R1200RT, '04 DR650, '09 K1300GT. All gone now except for the GT

As others have noted, not much new out there that interests me. The one bike that I let go but would still enjoy riding today is the R1100RS.

JimMoore 04-15-2017 04:27 PM

I would LOVE to buy one of the modern-day liter bikes, but I can't stomach $18,000 otd on a bike that I'll be crashing at the racetrack within ten minutes.

RIQUE 04-15-2017 05:44 PM

The new R1200RT looked nice until I saw it in person. I guess I was expecting a new R1200S and its not even close. The R NineT is in the scrambler league. I already own a S1000RR. I have the KTM 1290 Super Duke GT in sight but the design is difficult to appreciate.
