Installed new battery, air bag light on
Just installed a new battery in my 08 Cayman and the air bag warning light is on. I drove it about 15 miles thinking it might reset, not. Ideas?

My battery died last winter. Light has been on ever since. I have unhooked the battery a few times, no problem but when it becomes drained that light stays on. Happened 3 years ago and I had someone turn it off with a SnapOn tool.

I think by clearing the code you mean disconnecting the battery for a moment and reconnecting it. Just tried that and the light is still on.

Disconnecting the battery will not clear and air bag light, you need to read the code(s), and correct the problem before it will stay cleared.

Or use a code reader with the capability of clearing the code. If you were close by, I'd give mine a shot on your car. Mine does the air bag code on my 01 easy peasy.

Unfortunately when an SRS light is triggered for anything you need a code scanner capable of clearing the light. Usually, only the mfg specific tools will clear it.

iCarsoft POR-II resets the air bag indicator on my 07.
It also works with Boxster and Cayman.

Or PIWIS, PST2, Durametric. The first is dealer only mostly, some independents have the second as do dealers and the third requires a windows laptop but is quite capable if expensive but over a long period of ownership can pay for itself many times over.

Agree with getting a code reader. I have the Durametric and I have used it several times to reset codes. It seams like if I do any maintenance, I get a code (almost always PSM disabled code). Just this weekend, I flushed my coolant and I got a PSM code. Fortunately, the Durametric clears the codes very easily and I'm sure other readers will work as well. Not cheap though.

A generic code reader will read a lot of the emissions related codes. But get into security, airbags, brakes, set options, etc and the proprietary Porsche codes don't get read by the cheaper generic code readers. The government mandates the public availability of emissions and engine codes to prevent only the dealers from being able to work on the car, but there is no similar rule relating to the proprietary ones. Durametric had to discover all those codes by sniffing the buss and it took years of work to get their product to where it is today. They continue to expend their capabilities and only this week I read of a fix they produced for an older 986 where their code had worked on hundred of other cars but not this particular one. Buy the real thing, not a pirated older version.
Or go to a dealer. |

Thanks for all the info. Went to a shop that specialized in Porsches, they cleared the light. Life is good.
