New guy with some questions - 2006 Cayman S 987.1
2006 Cayman S. 80K runs like a rapped ape. So I have some oil on the front, drivers side of the valve cover. Apparently my logic of 914 and 911 valve cover removal can be tossed out the door. I have read on planet 9 where the motor might have to be dropped in order to re-seal (No gaskets on the 2006-2008) AND that you need a locking tool to do this. Other posts say no.... you don't have to drop the engine.
And yet another says.... hey use some oil resistant silicone and pull the cover bolts and seal the holes, then re-torque as that can often lead to some leakage and my visual might support that. Now that is something I can sink my teeth into. Jake Raby's CD on his method for rebuilding a 914, he uses thread sealer for many of the threads/bolts to help leaking. What's killing me here is and PLEASE someone educate me, but where's the damn workshop manual or a book like the Bentleys that let's us mechanically inclined folks to tackle these projects with a tried and true process from the factory? My 911SC Bentley helped me do anything I needed to do for that car. Even the Haynes did a decent job for the 914 but I also had the shop manuals for the 914. I did break down and buy the dirametric unit to read and manipulate the ECU. Big help so far. ANY help with a source for actual problem repairs (Not the service manual) would be greatly appreciated. A source with accurate and detailed process??? Comments on the thread sealant on the cover bolts? Dave |
Porsche stopped all print manuals in 2004 and switched to an online subscription service.
You do need the cam holding tool to remove the cam cover, and while a reseal can be done with the engine in, it is vastly easier dropped. Good luck. |
A rapped ape must be a rare bear indeed...

Valve cover leak? Is that the leak in question? Easy to do in car. Replace the bolts while you are at, they are cheap and come with the sealer already applied. 999 385 003 01
