Boxster S pricing

I have an opportunity to purchase a 2002 Boxster S, speed yellow, black interior, 56K miles on odo. IMS, RMS, clutch done, drives and handles nicely. Not hacked or abused. Three owner car. Asking price of $15,500. I got it down to $13,800. Will let buyer know in a day or two. What does the brain trust think? By the way, this will be my fourth Porsche. Thanks all for your unvarnished opinions....

In today's COVID inflated prices, that's a good deal.

But a couple of items to consider...

The 2002 is kind of a stepchild in the 986 range because Porsche made several improvements in the 03 (glove box, glass window, etc). The 03 improvements tend to sway people spending $$$ in this price range to opt for an 03 rather than go with an 02. Since these cars are approaching 20 yrs old, condition and mileage may have washed away the difference in price, but some ppl may only consider an 03-04 when looking for a 986. This can hurt the value of 02s.

Speed Yellow is a great color, but it has a very limited audience. Many a wifey has nixed the purchase of a SY Porsche. Porsche owners like "safe" colors - silver, black, white, etc. Reds and blues can even have some nay-sayers. SY is way out there on the wild side.

I bring these 2 points up for a reason - you need to consider them when it comes time for you to sell your Box. If that's 10 yrs from now, then no big deal. You say this will be your 4th Porsche but how many have been 2-seaters? A 2-seater sports car is a lifestyle vehicle and if something in your life changes - get married, have kids, divorced, downsized, retire, etc, that changes your lifestyle, a 2-seater car may not fit in your plans and you suddenly have to sell. If you've never had a 2-seater, you may not realize how it impacts your plans until it's too late. If you buy this particular Box S and it doesn't work out for you, you'll have these 2 items to overcome when selling.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying don't buy this car. Just consider all the options. I buy and sell Boxsters and Caymans as a hobby, so I see these things all the time. And as far as non-safe colors are concerned, I own an orange Box S and a signal green Cayman S. Get compliments all the time, but half the ppl I know would be afraid to buy one in either color.

Dare to be different.

Boxster S

Thanks guys, appreciate the advise. Good points Huxster, couldn’t find an ‘03 in my price range locally. This car is close by, took my wife with me to look at it. She thought the speed yellow was fine, something a little different from the two red and one white Porsche’s I had. My 77 Targa was basically a two seater as it had rear seat delete. This Boxster has sport seats, very comfortable. Just the two of us, no kids. Both retired and at the age where this will probably be a keeper. Haven’t made a decision yet, will keep you posted.

I had a speed yellow 2000 boxster. Loved the color! $13,8 sounds reasonable too. Gratuitous pic of the old car:

I love Speed Yellow! I've been shopping for a Boxster S, and that price sounds reasonable, depending on the details. If you pass on this car, please ask the owner to contact me. sandy@nhsys.com. Thx!
