Oil lever check

I think I am missing one of the manuals for my 09 Boxster.....
How do I check the oil level?

Turn your key one click to light up the dash. The oil gauge will start checking level and give you a reading. Don't confuse full with all bars lighting up. The top bar means 'over filled'. Do this check after the engine oil is warm and has been shut off for about 30 minutes.

On my 2010 Boxster S, the procedure is in the Owners manual under the "Instruments, On-Board Computer, Warnings" section. Odd place to locate it....
Engine running at idle, engine warmed up, car sitting level, wait for it to time out on its test. Top bar lit = oil OK, DON't add. Only bottom bar lit = add oil NOW. In between, add some soon.
Good luck.

now after mild overheaing and followed by white smoke out.Car is diagnosed with needing head gasket.coolant is in oil.I am frustrated with how long it took to get this diagnosis. This has been both dependable and fun in my two years ownership. Will need to sell it very soon. it has 75000 miles and is tiptronic.

Probability is

not a head gasket but caused by a crack in the head. Or in the expansion tank.

In all the years we have worked on these water-cooled engines, we have never seen or heard of a head gasket failing. The gasket is multi layer steel, and is actually stronger than the head or engine case.

I know what you're thinking, "where the hell's the dip stick?" In the 987, there is no dipstick. I know that in the 987.1 non-S cars, it's possible to backdate a dipstick. In the Boxster S with the 3.4L there is no place to put a dipstick at all.

Get the engine up to operating temp. Turn the motor off, but leave the key "on". In the "information center" you'll see a countdown clock. Usually it's 5 mins if you JUST shut the motor off.

If you get home and shut the motor off and then go inside for a bit and then come back out 10-15 mins later, the countdown may only be a few seconds.

If you don't get the car warm first, the countdown may be a lot longer than 5 mins.

Sounds like you need a second opinion, although if you did overheat it, bad things can happen.

Intermixes are generally from a cracked head. That happens when the engine is overheated. I’d wait on buying a gasket.

its tough to find a shop in a new area,is like trial and error. But the next one was recommended by a call to a shop here who said their Porsche guy had retired.I am hopeful for someone with a little more skill and knowledge.Well see...Meanwhile the car is in my garage until the 13th.
