The easy way to do a 986 Axle Shaft
The forum writeups, youtube and google all informed me that in order to change the half-shaft (right) on my 2002 Boxster, it was necessary to drop the exhaust and sway bar. I'm here to tell you that those instructions are for those being paid by the hour. I had the back end of the car already jacked up. All I did was zip off the axle nut, remove the 6 bolts on the transmission side of the shaft, drop the transmission cover and there was ready access. Simply remove the wheel, place a wood block under the rotor and jack it up a bit. The axle slides right out. Given the rust that is typical of our older vehicle's exhaust, this is potentially a huge savings of knuckle-busting and perhaps even replacing the exhaust.

I have done this job several times and it is not as easy as you make it sound. What are you calling a transmission cover?
