Oil Level Sensor
 

Good Morning everybody.

I picked up 2008 Cayman base model a few months ago and I am really enjoying the car. I did my first oil service this weekend, and like a dummy I didn't pay too close attention to the oil level reading before i began. Changed the oil and the filter and put in 5 quarts, gave it about 20 minutes to settle and then checked the oil level and all the bars are lit up, thought that was a bit strange as I was going to creep up to the top line to make sure I didn't overfill the car and the capacity is somewhere around 7.5 liters?

Just for giggles, i opened up the drain plug and pulled out another quart or 3 and checked the gauge again, and all of the bars are still solid white.

I am leaning towards thinking the oil level sender/sensor is bad, but wanted to run it by you guys and before I start tearing apart anything. Does anybody have any technical specs for ohm-ing out the meter to test it?

These take a bit of time to reset after draining the oil. The correct fill quantity is around 8 quarts, so I would fill it to that level or a little less, then start the car and warm it up or take it for a short drive. After sitting for a few min, check it again and top off as necessary.

Awesome, thanks for the information, took it for a short drive (5-10 miles) and it's still showing overfull, i will keep an eye on it over the next week and see if the level changes.

You are driving around with an unknown amount of oil in the motor?

That sounds like a very bad idea to me

Drain the oil completely and refill with the correct amount, then deal w/ the guage
