Tiptronic Selects Drive/Reverse

Hoping for some guidance on a 2000 Boxster base with Tiptronic. 115k miles. I have not yet viewed the actual vehicle yet. Looking for some possibilities first to determine a reasonable offer. Owner says the trans attempts to select drive and reverse at the same time. So, the question would be what is the possible problem? Just shift solenoid or something major? Only other information I have is that the check engine light is on and owner says it hasn't been scanned. Any input would be greatly appreciated as it is a good looking car and I'm sure I need to add to the collection of my other non running Porsche projects!

I have zero experience in Tip transmission versions. As for the check engine light you can buy a pretty cheap OBDII Bluetooth connector these days and check it yourself or invest in your own scan tool, which will pay for itself in short order. As far as that trans, I would offer money based on replacement since you don't know the cause. Go for worst case scenario in what you offer, money-wise, because you just never know.

My guess would be the gear position selector switch is faulty. I just replaced mine
My symptoms were slightly different to yours - I was getting an error message on the dash saying transmission problem (with the cogs symbol) and it would default to 3rd gear limp mode

at 20 years old these are becoming common failure points from the research I did
