Boxster Info Please
I am preparing to put my RV up for sale/trade for a Boxster. I will not be able to afford new, somewhere in the 24-28k range I figure the RV is worth.
What should I look for, what to avoid, what to really run away from, etc... Thanks. P.S. If anyone is looking for a 1998 Class C RV with a V10 Triton let me know!

Your price will get you a 99' or 00' based on your location and options. Run from the 97' model year, look for a 2000, although, when I shopped for my 99' car, I really did not feel the power diference between it amd a 2000. You will be hard pressed to find anything Porsche certified at in that price range as well, so be sure to have all the records checked and ask whether or not the car has had a major (30k, 45K) service performed, you will find many cars around the 30k mark in mileage and the 30k service runs around $650. If you live in a city, with a ton of stop and go, tip may be your friend.
They are a great car. Good luck!

You can't get an S as cheaply as you can get the standard Boxster. The S came out in 2000, IIRC. Between a high mileage S 2000 and a low miles 2001 regular, I'd take the reg. Dealers are dealing, there's a lot of Boxster inventory due to lease returns. I don't agree that you can't buy a car right at the dealer. You have to walk out on them at least once. I bought my car at a dealer and negotiated for a WEEK. They took several thousand off a used car with 16,000 miles. I made them drop the interest rate as well. I was prepared to walk away for a month if need be.

What's wrong with the '97s?

There were some problems with some of the engine castings on the early Boxsters - 97 - 99 I believe. They were porous and could leak. Porsche sleeved the bores but the solution apparently wasn't perfect.

My mechanic told me that the 97 and early 98 model years were the worst for the casting problems...by 99 the issue was solved.

You and your mechanic are probably right, and I hate to tar all of the 2.5L cars with the same brush, but for my money I'd avoid the 2.5s altogether and get a 2.7L Boxster. The price difference between the 1999 and 2000 doesn't seem significant, you get the improved interior and horsepower increase, so why not play it safe? The 99 would have to be a tremendous bargain for me to consider one over a 00.
