2000 Boxster S...questions for a possible purchase

Admitted 911 nut..there, got that out of the way. However I have found a 2000 Boxster S that I am smitten over. Questions: 1. Any known issues w/ the 2000 model 2. Any preference over Finnish built or German built (in my mind I would REALLY like this thing to be built in Germany) 3. Special tools required to "tear down" the water cooled motor? Just curious...I have an 83 SC right now and while it takes a few specialized tools, its pretty straight forward. 4. Clutch job...944 hard or 911 hard? I can't believe ANY clutch is harder than a 944 (please don't ask me how I know...) 5. DIY friendly? I have read a few comments here, but generally speaking I like to do as much maint. as I can... 6. What personal/PPI items should I check before taking it to a dealer? Any other general comments would be great. Also, the car seems REALLY cheap. Seller says clean title, and I would run a CARFAX (with a grain of salt) PPI and personal inspection... R/ Dustin |
Here are some answers for ya (mixed review based upon what you were asking)
1. No significant issues other than the ones that pertain to Boxsters in general (coolant tanks, AC evap core, ignition switch, cab top) 2. Quality control is actually slightly better from the Finnish plant. 3. Several special tools required. Some very expensive 4. In-between. You can drop the transmission and leave the engine in the car. Again, special tools needed. 5. Maintenance is DIY friendly. Many minor repairs are DIY ok. 6. Definately check the drive cables for the cab top for fraying. Check the lid for the cab top for warping or dents. Check drains in cab top housing for obstruction. Rear main seal. Leakage greater than seepage from valve covers and chain boxes. Factory battery sucks. They are definately fun cars. They seem to be holding up fairly well. I service 2 or 3 that are over 100K miles.
