what kind of AT fluid does a 97 trip take?
howdy all !
i drained AT pan on my 97 boxster then went to dealer to get fluid for it WOW $$$$$ 325 $$$ for 20 liters (order only) of atf all i need is 3.5 . so i called around the other dealer can order it by the liter but its $45, but he said that audi atf is the same and its only $20 /liter and in stock ... so i called around some more and someone told me "any dextron III synthetic atf will work fine" so mobil 1 atf is only $7 /quart ??? any thoughts? thanks chuck |

I posted this some time ago. The Porsche dealership told me that any tranny that suffers failure and has the incorrect fluid will have voided its warranty. Will regular old ATF work - probably, will it cause long term damage, I don't know, as a shop, am I willing to risk it with my customers cars? - hell no. AFJuvat

The fluid from Porsche is not $320 a gallon. Usually 4 litres will fill correctly. The problem is Porsche only sell it as a 20 litre container.
Might be cheaper to have an independent shop change it.

well here is how it ended ... i drained about 6 liters and after looking at the audi and vw info i called shell oil (1800bestoil) there tech said that quaker state and pennzoil "multi vehicle ATF" would work great! even mixing the fluids so thats what i did. it is written on the bottle that its good for porsche. i will let yall know if it turns bad. by the way the fluid that came out seemed in need of change kind of burnt.
i think its all relative ... for 1 liter of atf... porsche $45, audi $20, vw $15, mobil 1 $8, pennzoil $3.56. from what i can tell the first 3 are all the same product for the ZF trannys, and the next 2 are just more advanced products that can do more things. but what do i know i'm a pilot. as the price of boxsters comes down there will be more of this type of info coming out. have fun good luck chuck |

Just a item from a forum for one of those "other" cars.
