Why not have the synchro replaced and rebuild the existing unit? @29.5 the rest of it should be righteous. BTW, who the hell has been driving it? and do you downshift from third a lot?

I'm all for the rebuild but not finding anyone (except you) in support of the concept. Have you rebuilt one before or know someone who has?

I think the previous owner ran the hell out of it and i'm the unlucky recipient of their misuse. The clutch was replaced (under warranty) when I purchased but the dealer found no other signs of trouble.

Dont downshift an inordinate amount nor run it too hard. I did have an incedent where it did grind pretty good but it took a while for the constant grind as I entered second.

In searching for a reman/used I spoke with a salvage guy, told him what I was looking for and he replied, "Let me guess, 2nd gear?" He said he gets this call frequently for 986, 996 & TT.

Go figure.

Very Sorry guy, I didn't know someone else had been driving it. If it had a clutch and now needs a synchro that early, it may have been driven hard. If it was my vehicle, I would research the best qualified repair center near you. The cost would hurt me too but the options are few. Transmissions can be difficult repairs, especially for non professionals without experience on that particular case. At least a rebuild you know what you have vs another used case. One other thought is to research specialists on Boxster transmissions via the net and Porsche magazines and glean whatever advise you can from them. Good Luck, I hope it's running for you soon.

Porsche does not sell internal parts for the 6 speed, just the 5 speed.

This information is not correct, I just saw a custom shop in Excellence magazine offering to fix gear problems in 6 speed S transmissions. If it's still important to you post back and I'll try to search for the proper issue and shop contact info.

It is importaunt

Thanks.

I have Excellence from 6 years ago. When I started Boxstering.

So if I need a first gear syncro, or a bearing, or a gear, then whom do I call with a 6 speed transmission problem?

Porsche does not sell internal parts for the 996/986 transmission.

OK here's two ads that caught my eye:

Ad says save thousands, repair 996/boxster S 1/2nd gear shifting problems

Boulder, CO 80303

Voice 303 443 4327 fax 303 442 4347

This one might interest other Boxster owners too:

I didn't see the manuals advertised yet they are supposed to arrive July 1 according to the magazine ad.

Porsche Crest

This is the reason I love the Porsche community. Unfortunately, i've already pulled some strings w/ a buddy who works @ Porsche in my area. He is getting me a reman trans w/ 2 yr warranty. I pulled the trigger already.
Thanks to all who replied!

Nothing sounds unfortunate about that pursuit, good for you. Toolpants wanted the links anyway.
